Topic: Otocinclus

  OtocinclusArt
Otocinclus species themselves are more confined to low-lying rivers and streams of the immense Amazon basin, principally the Rio Grande do Sul and La Plata regions (so far as described).
Such is not the case with Otocinclus; they get along with their own, other members of the genus, in fact with most everybody.
Due to mixed species shipments, the wannabe breeder is encouraged to purchase and stock Otocinclus in as large a grouping as practical, and provide propitious circumstances (food, habitat, water quality) for nature to take its course.

Otocinclus are harvested in such large numbers that they remain one of the cheapest catfish (and therefore expendable according to importers) to buy.
Since Otocinclus are stressed (indeed what fish wouldn't be?) from being kept in crowded fish store conditions, not to mention the ride home to your tank, it's important to keep the water they are going to live in as clean as possible.
If the otocinclus has a HUGE belly and looks as though it swallowed a marble it's possible it may have a bacterial infection and not be overfed.

 FAQ: Algae
Easily controlled with algae eaters such as fl mollies, Otocinclus, Peckoltia and siamese algae eaters.
When they are hungry, they are eager consumers of most algae types seen during the break-in period.
Otocinclus are diligent algae eaters, but are best kept in schools due to their small size.

 Erdington Aquatics -
Since otocinclus are mainly herbivores they need massive quantities of greens to keep them healthy.
If your otocinclus is slim in any sense of the word then you need to supplement their diet with zucchini or spinach, or figure out a way to grow more algae!
What I have experienced is that the otocinclus will ignore a fresh vegetable in the tank, but once it has been in there for 12+ hours or more then it registers as food.

Midget Suckermouth Catfish - Otocinclus affinis
Otocinclus are happiest when they have company of their own species.
The algae in your tank will probably never be enough to keep Otocinclus well-fed: blanched spinach, a weighted blanched "bouquet" of parsley, sliced zucchini, also blanched so it will sink, all are welcome.
I have read that the Otocinclus affinis may loose condition very suddenly for no apparent reason and die when placed in a new tank.

 Otocinclus Catfish, Otto Cat
The Otocinclus is a great addition to a peaceful planted tank and a small school of them can form a great algae cleanup crew.
Ideally, you should quarantine your Otocinclus before introducing them to your main tank so that you can monitor them for disease and also provide them with optimal water conditions and no competition from other tank mates for fish food.
If your 'oto' gets much more than 2 inches it's not an 'oto' and you need to relocate the impostors as they are extremely aggressive to community fish and will literally suck a hole in their sides and they will die.

Part of a large family of Loricariidae, the Otocinclus is one of the smallest.
Found in rapidly moving rivers, the Otocinclus swims and moves using its sucker-type mouth.
This catfish should be housed in at least a 30-gallon aquarium, with high filtration along with high aeration.

 Robyn's Otto Page
Otocinclus like swift currents in part of their tank.
Often, after a batch of ottos are added, 20-80% of them die but the survivors may live for years since they have reached a sustainable population based on the algae and other food available.
Die offs of new otocinclus are also common due to their desired good water quality and sensitivity to many medications.
