Shirataki village is located in the northeast of Hokkaido, and its agriculture is marginal because of the high, steep terrain, causing cold-weather damage and water deficit.

 Profile of the Tokachi River
The river flows from Mt. Tokachi-dake of the Taisetsu Mountain Range -- the roof of Hokkaido -- and reaches a major city of Tokachi Area with the combined flows from the Sahoro, Memuro, Bisei andd Shikaribetsu rivers.
The Tokachi and the Otofuke, Satsunai, Shihoro, Tobetsu, Sarubetsu and Toshibetsu rivers flow together and the confluent river calmly flows straight through the Tonai Plain and into the Pacific Ocean at Otsu, Toyokoro, Nakagawa-gun.
Moreover, since the water of the river includes moderate amounts of iron derived from gravel, it has a reputation as some of the best drinking water in the country and is used for manufacturing soft drinks.

Between the ages of 9 and 12, a young Akira Ifukube lived in the town of Otofuke, Hokkaido.
Otofuke is where Ifukube was exposed to the traditional music and dancing of the Ainu which greatly affected his musical style in his later years as a composer.
Otofuke Town Song is slow and melodious, similar perhaps to the musical texture of Ifukube's own Kushiro Marshland score.

The Daisetsuzan National Park lies in the center of the most northerly of the main Japanese islands, Hokkaido.
At the upper end of the gorge are two basins, Kobvako ("little box") and Obako ("big box"), so called because anyone standing within the vertical walls of these depressions feels he is enclosed within a box.
Halfway along the gorge is Sounkyo-onsen, one of the most popular holiday resorts in Hokkaido, with a cableway running up several stages to a height of 4,265ft/ 1,300m, from which a chair lift continues on the ascent.
