An otological drain tube which is capable of being implanted in the ear drum to vent the differential pressure that can build up across the ear drum as the result of blocked eustachian tubes, a buildup of internal liquid pressure in the inner ear due to illness, or a change in atmospheric pressure.
The otological drain tube of claim 1, whereby the cost to manufacture is significantly less, and typically 16 percent of heretofore known otological drain tubes of metallic construction.
This invention relates to otological drain tubes which are capable of being implanted in the ear drum to vent the differential pressure which builds up across the ear drum as the result of blocked eustachian tubes, a buildup of internal liquid pressure due to illness, accident, or a change in atmospheric pressure.

 Patent 5137523: Otological drain tube
It is another object of this invention to provide an otological drain tube which can be surgically sterilized; the otological drain tube material is acceptable for sterilization and the construction is formed to prevent cavities therein which would not have drain flow.
Removal of the otological drain tube 2 is by the reverse process after separating the membrane from the drain tube 2.
In a design of an otological drain tube 2, three (3) drain holes 18 were made 0.005 inches in diameter, 0.085 inches in length, and placed on a 0.045 inch diameter circle.

Study Design: This was a prospective, experimental study of the relationship between illness and otological complications during experimental upper respiratory virus infection in 316 adult volunteers.
In studies with different viruses, experimental infection caused sequential otological complications that were consistent with a causal pathway leading from virus infection to otitis media via the intermediate development of eustachian tube dysfunction and middle ear underpressure.
13,14 The data for infection, illness, and one measure of an otological complication (abnormal middle ear underpressure) were used to define the relative frequencies of infected subjects reporting illness, developing complications, and developing complications in the absence of illness.

Parents continue to report that they receive notes directing them to take their child for an audiological and/or otological evaluation, and they naively forfeited wages to take time off from work to do so, and pay for the evaluations, themselves.

Training otological surgeons and planning surgical procedures for the middle-ear are two activities that require extensive use of cadavers; surgeons often re-train and plan procedures employing cadavers, while medical students use cadavers to acquire necessary surgical skills.
However, high-fidelity computer-based modelling, simulation and visualization systems can be used to augment such activities, thereby reducing the cost of training, and giving greater flexibility for clinicians and clinicians-to-be to explore and design procedures[1].
Training costs are reduced as fewer cadavers are required for training otological surgeons; this is especially critical as cadavers are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
