	Ōtomo clan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		As the Ōtomo were one of the major clans of Kyūshū, along with the Shōni and the Shimazu, they had a central role in organizing efforts against the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281.
		In 1552, emissaries from the Ōtomo clan traveled to Goa with Xavier, to meet with the Portuguese Governor of the Indies.
		Towards the end of the 16th century, the Ōtomo, alongside the Shimazu clan, fought the Mori clan, expert sailors and important allies of Oda Nobunaga.

		Motochika was born at Oko Castle in the Nagaoka district of Tosa, the eldest son of Chosokabe Kunichika (1503-1560).

		Yoshiaki - or Yoshinori - was the Daimyô of a clan that traced its roots to a certain Fujiwara Hidesato, the adopted son of Nakahara Chikayoshi.
		Tensions with the Ôuchi of Suo and Nagato brought a war in 1501, and a victory for the Ôtomo in Buzen at Uma-ga-take.

		Director Katsuhiro Otomo was the acclaimed writer and artist of multi-volume sagas like "Fire Ball", "Domu" and the original magazine version of "Akira", reprinted in the States by Marvel's Epic Comics division.
		Otomo has made two live-action movies ("Give Me a Gun, Give Me Freedom" in 1988 and "World Apartment Horror" in 1991), but his only work in animation prior to "Akira" had been a few short films.

		The clan experienced a power struggle in the 1470's that saw the main Môri line absorb both it's branch families.
		Motonari was born Shojumaru, the second son of Môri Hiromoto, a daimyo who struggled against the local Takeda clan (not to be confused with the Kai branch of that family) and the encroaching Oûchi.
