Otomo Yoshihide (born August 1, 1959) is a Japanese experimental musician.
Otomo studied at the University of Tokyo from 1979 where he took a course on ethnomusicology in which he concentrated on Japanese pop music during World War II and the development of musical instruments during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (samples of instruments and music from this period are found in several of his records).
Among the other musicians Otomo has worked with are Jon Rose, Yamatsuka Eye of The Boredoms (with Eye as MC Hellshit and Otomo as DJ Carhouse), Butch Morris, Voice Crack, Keith Rowe, Toshimaru Nakamura, Bill Laswell, John Zorn and poire_z.

 2001 Waka - Yakamochi
The son of Ôtomo no Tabito, Yakamochi went with his father to Kyûshû and, no doubt, was exposed to the literary circle Tabito formed there.
This was due partially to the decline in the fortunes of the Ôtomo family, and partially to the fact that, in the latter part of his life, Yakamochi became increasingly involved in the intrigues surrounding the throne and failed to back the winning side.
Nevertheless, during his productive period of just over twenty years, Yakamochi showed himself to be a poet of great versatility, as at home with nagauta as he was with tanka: his poems mourning his concubine showed his human side, as did his many love poems to his wife, the Elder Maiden of Sakanoue.

 Science Fair Projects - Manyoshu
The compiler, or the final in a series of compilers, is believed to be Otomo no Yakamochi, and the last datable poem in the collection is from 759.
There is no preface: the format of prefacing official collections, such as the Kokinshū, developed later.
The fourth period spans 730–760 and includes the work of the last great poet of this collection, the compiler Otomo no Yakamochi himself, who not only wrote many original poems but also edited, updated and refashioned an unknown number of ancient poems.

Renga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japanese phrase "Ageku no hate" (挙句の果て) means "at last", as Ageku is the last stanza of Renga.
The earliest Renga recorded is in Manyoshu where Otomo no Yakamochi and a Buddhist nun (Ama 尼) made and exchanged 5-7-5 syllable count and 7-7 syllable count.
This style of Renga is called Haikai no Renga or simply Haikai (俳諧の連歌) and Matsuo Basho is known as the greatest Haikai poet.

Otomo no Sakanoue & Kasa no Iratsume
The compiler of the anthology was Otomo no Yakamochi (c.718-785), and two of the most interesting women in Manyoshu are connected to him---the one as his aunt, his poetic mentor, and later his mother-law; the other as one of his lovers.
Yakamochi was apparently not the most faithful of lovers, but posterity gave Kasa no Iratsume her revenge: her poetry became extremely influential in later periods, much more so than Yakamochi's.
Kasa no Iratsume is generally considered by scholars of Japanese a better poet than Otomo no Sakanoue.

[minstrels] Two Tanka -- Otomo No Yakamochi
During Japan's Heian period (794-1185 A.D.) it was considered essential for a woman or man of culture to be able to both compose beautiful poetry and to choose the most aesthetically pleasing and appropriate paper, ink, and symbolic attachment---such as a branch, a flower---to go with it.
Tanka were often composed as a kind of finale to every sort of occasion; no experience was quite complete until a tanka had been written about it.
Tanka have changed and evolved over the centuries, but the form of five syllabic units containing 31 syllables has remained the same.Topics have expanded from the traditional expressions of passion and heartache, and styles have changed to include modern language and even colloquialisms.
