The Castle of Otranto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Castle of Otranto is a 1764 novel by Horace Walpole.
This first edition purported to be a translation based on a manuscript printed at Naples in 1529 and recently rediscovered in the library of "an ancient Catholic family in the north of England." The Italian manuscript's story, it was claimed, derived from a story still older, dating back perhaps as far as the Crusades.
Amid speculations about an "ancient prophecy" claiming "That the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it," Manfred's second union is disrupted by a series of supernatural events involving many oversized limbs, ghosts, mysterious blood, and a true prince.

First published pseudonymously in 1764, The Castle of Otranto purported to be a translation of an Italian story of the time of the crusades.
The servants were delightful in the naivete they evoked in conversation with their "betters." They were not truly naive, of course, and spoke the way they did primarily in order to protect themselves and their masters or mistresses.
To say, however, that "Otranto" is cliche would, of course, be incorrect as it was the first of its kind and thus set the precedent.

Otranto presents itself to the visitor in the guise of a medieval city, still attached to the periods that preceded its destruction.
First and foremost: the austere CATHEDRAL, which the Turkish hordes used as a barracks for their cavarly; and it is providential that the precious mosaic (1163-66) of the priest Pantaleoni survived this desecration and has come down to us, almost unspoilt.
Other interesting monuments of Otranto are: the grandiose TORRE ALFONSINA (1483); the Castle, built by Ferdinand of Aragon (1485-98), square in shape with cylindrical towers at the corners; the gate of access to the city; and the X-XI century Byzantine Church SAN PIETRO.

The Otranto Barrage, designed by the Allies to prevent access by enemy submarines to the Mediterranean via the Adriatic, proved as much of a failure as the Northern Barrage which was subsequently established in the North Sea.
Almost from the start the Otranto Barrage lacked sufficient anti-submarine resources as priorities elsewhere in the Mediterranean led to the diversion of manpower and materials.
By this time trawler casualties - incurred during night-time Austrian raids, notably during the Battle of the Otranto Straits when three destroyers and two cruisers sank 14 patrol craft and severely damaged an Italian supply convoy - led the Allies to effectively abandon night patrols.

Jan Svankmajer: The Castle of Otranto [Otrantsk zámek] (1979)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
If Walpole's Castle of Otranto, spellbound in its moulding pages, was for Jan Svankmajer anything other than a pretext for just such a game then we would encounter in his new film that slightly ironic and slightly poetic detachment with which ageing intellectuals usually return to the books of their youth.
The parallel structure of Svankmajer's Castle of Otranto highlights forcefully the contrasting styles of presentation: the sequences of Walpole's novel which intertwine with Dr Vozáb's heuristic efforts are animated with that stillness and paperiness characteristic of period illustration, while the scholar's argument is emphasised by the extreme verité style typical of film reportage.
The Castle of Otranto represents an evolution in the development of Svankmajer's films in that here animated and acted parts interpenetrate and combine in a much more organic way than in his A Quiet Week in the House.
