This is the first Ottakars book store that I have been to and I was very impressed.
Ottakars is another excellent bookshop on a par with Waterstones.
Ottakars does seem to have a better range of children's books and that sort of thing however so I suppose it depends upon where your interests lie.

Ottakars Books UK Profile at Cheapest Books UK
Ottakar's is one of Britain's leading book chains with a reputation for strongly individual high street shops staffed by book enthusiasts able to offer supreme levels of customer service to their customers.
Ottakar's began in 1987 when it was realised that there was an opportunity to establish a chain of bookshops offering high levels of range and service across England's market towns, and consequently three branches in Brighton, Banbury and Salisbury were opened.
From the outset, Ottakar's philosophy is that the secret of great booksellling lies in people who enjoy a real passion for books and who are able to pass that passion on to their customers.

From its inception Ottakars has believed that the secret of great bookselling lies in the recruitment of people who enjoy a real passion for books and who are able articulate that passion to their customers.
Ottakars opened in Buchanan Galleries in September 1999 and this is their only store in Glasgow city centre.

Chain reaction from Guardian Unlimited: Culture Vulture
In their assessment, firstly, there are few places in which branches of Ottakar's and Waterstone's are in close proximity, and secondly, in the places where this is the case, it appears to have little effect on the "range of books and quality of service" of either.
Ottakar's is the only one, as the article states, whose "branches are locally run by staff who are sensitive to the needs of their local communities and choose their stock accordingly"
My experience of Ottakar's been been very positive and I hope that if the company does have a new owner (and I accept that this may be necessary in today's harsh retail climate), they are able to appreciate what a valuable asset they have in their staff.

Savings would be generated by applying its IT systems and Ottakar's would boost its profits from the first full year of ownership, HMV said.
Independent directors of Ottakar's recommended the initial 350p-a-share offer from Book Store Acquisitions - the bid vehicle of Mr Heneage and Mr Dunne - because there appeared to be no prospect of respite from tough trading conditions.
Ottakar's has issued two disappointing trading updates already this year and has suffered from supermarkets and online retailers such as Amazon offering heavily discounted deals on bestsellers.

Ottakars were good because there was likely to be some difference between the various stores.
As a current employee of Ottakar’s, certainly in our store, we were informed of the takeover bid by our managers, and although there was interesting reading from the press, the level of communication internally was excellent.
Although it is sad that Ottakar’s will become Waterstones, in reality and the long term this had to happen, or Ottakar’s would not have been able to continue trading, which would have been more devasting!

Famed for Victorian elegance Llandudno was considered an odd choice for a modern, city style coffee shop although in it's first few months, Coffee @ Ottakars has proved to be a resounding success.

There's been some pretty decent stuff come out of the Get London reading series of events this year, and next week there's another one taking place at Ottakar's bookshop in Greenwich.
On May 17 the shop is hosting a reception at which "Greenwich's finest" (although we're not exactly sure who would make up that group) along with the Ottakar's staff will make the case for their favourite top 10 'Metro Reads'.
After you've heard all the arguments the voting to determine the definitive metropolitan read (that is "the ultimate books that best capture and evoke the heart, soul and character of a city") will begin.

The recent acquisition of ottakars has left a lot of people in the book industry somewhat disappointed.
Customers too have been saddened by the news that the big W owned by HMV have bought out the award winning book chain bringing to an end a specialist bookseller with a REAL love for books from the booksellers right up to head office and James Henage.
There is much I have left out of this brief introduction but I hope people’s discontent can be channelled into direct action if we really want to.

Ottakar's, a chain founded in 1987 by its current Chief Executive James Heneage and named after the Tintin comic King Ottokar's Sceptre, is a textbook example of such a progression.
HMV said on Wednesday there would be some job losses as a result of the takeover, but was mum on whether Heneage would be among the casualties.
Some observers had suggested that high-street retailer WH Smith could enter the fray, but it has so far shown no sign of bidding--and the chances of it emerging as a Johnny-come-lately victor appear to be remote.

And the other major non-story is the proposed takeover of the UK retail book-chain Ottakar's by HMV, owners of another big high-street book firm, Waterstone's.
But while Google seem to understand very well the massive difference which the internet has made, a difference which is earth-shaking in relation to the book world, the dear old Publishers Association, and the Society of Authors, just don't seem to have got it yet.
The Ottakar's acquisition is a seperate issue, and the most serious one our industry faces in the short term.

Neil Gaiman - Neil Gaiman's Journal: Includes special guest review
Normal practice is for the chain (usually Watersones or Ottakars) to charge an extra 10-15 for the service of binding in a signed page, removing the dustjacket and putting the book in a cardboard slipcase.
I've only seen the Ottakars signed edition of Anansi Boys briefly, when I arrived in the UK, but it looked lovely -- like some serious bookmaking was going on (not simply greedily "removing the dustjacket", you'll be pleased to hear) from a new embossed leathery cover down to the silvered edges of the pages.
I'm afraid the author doesn't have much to do with pricing: these things are arranged between the publisher (who has the rights to the book) and the small-press publisher (Ottakars, or, in the US, Hill House) who license the rights to do their edition of the book from the publisher.

The Independent reports that Ottakar's brand will disappear from UK high streets by Christmas so that HMV can revive its own fortunes - so bad at the moment that annual pre-tax profits crashed by 37 per cent to £80.2m, and the company's shares fell 5.25p to 168p.
According to current HMV chief Alan Giles, it's a case of it being "too costly" to maintain both Waterstone's and Ottakar's as separate brands, even though it was "not an easy decision" to make.
Giles further added in the Telegraph: "We think that by bringing them together we can create a much stronger, more profitable business." He said around 100 people were employed at the administrative sites and that there would be "some job losses".
