Fossombrone being within the papal states, Petrucci applied for a patent with the Doge for the exclusive right to print music, which was granted for several years; however the Pope rescinded the patent when Petrucci failed to produce keyboard music, granting it instead to one of Petrucci's competitors at Rome.
Petrucci's technique required three impressions; each sheet of music would be run through the presses once for the staves, once for the music, and once for the words.
Petrucci's method was soon superseded by the innovations attributed to Pierre Attaignant, who developed and popularized the single-impression method of printing in 1528.

Music from the Renaissance and Baroque
Petrucci churned out books of songs, which were so successful that publishers in other cities soon followed suit.
What's more, Petrucci's early prints included a very cosmopolitan selection, so that a wide variety of styles and forms were made available to an increasingly large buying public.
Although this output of madrigals and chansons circulated widely in the courts and cities of Europe, by the late sixteenth century most of the musical innovations occurred in the Italian cities.

Finally, in the 1490s, a printer working in Venice named Ottaviano Petrucci designed and cast a complete set of musical symbols and devised a method whereby, in three separate pressings, he was able to print music.
Although Petrucci devoted entire books to Josquin's masses and issued large numbers of the composer's motets, he offered the chansons only in the early anthologies.
Two of the pieces in the final set are from Petrucci prints, "Et la la la" from Canti C and "Rumfeltière" from the Odhecaton.

Ottaviano dei Petrucci to the Duke of Venice 1498
Named after the famous printer of musical scores, Ottaviano dei Petrucci (18 June 1466 - May 1539), the Petrucci Project is about digitalizing the wealth of music in libraries and archives around the world which was never published, or is long out of print, virtually inaccesible to most musicians.
The Gutenberg Project for literature in English and the Miguel de Cervantes for Spanish literature projects have enlisted individuals and institutions to enter the data-- now there are over thirty thousand volumes in digital form, easily downloadable from any browser to your screen or printer.

Ottaviano Petrucci, a printer working in Venice, devised an ingenious solution to this problem.
Petrucci published the Harmonice musices odhecaton, a collection of popular music largely drawn from Franco Flemish composers, in 1501, and this is generally accepted as the first edition of published music.
The Odhecaton must have been profitable and popular; during the next twenty years, Petrucci published over fifty additional books of music, covering sacred and secular, vocal and instrumental music in all existing genres of the time.

There were also keyboard tablatures, which similarly created an easy-to-follow notation for amateurs.
(The symbols for guitar chords today work on the same principle of tablature.) The popularity of the method led a printer named Ottaviano Petrucci to produce collections of lute intabulations of many well-known songs, as well as arrangements of dance melodies for keyboard and lute.
Indeed, perhaps because proficiency on the lute or the spinet was considered de rigueur for an accomplished lady or a courtier, these books apparently sold well.

Its release comes just a few months prior to the fifth centenary of the first musical edition printed by Ottaviano Petrucci (in 1501).
These anthologies, familiar to all lute specialists in their facsimile editions, had been underestimated by renowned lutenists, who had almost exclusively limited their use to dances and ricercars.
Cherici, a Milanese lutenist who also made his name as an excellent accompanist, was also responsible for having conceived an original journey through all the musical forms of the early Petrucci editions, in which the listener is the protagonist of a passionate journey through time.
