Otters are powerful swimmers, but can also travel quickly on land and often propel themselves into a rapid slide on their bellies on snow or ice; they also like to slide down river banks into the water.
Northern river otters have their dens on land, and they hunt in a wide variety of aquatic habitats, including lakes, rivers, inland wetlands and swamps, coastal marshes and even the open ocean.

The watershed is a drainage basin of the Red River and the major tributaries of the watershed are the Ottertail and Pelican Rivers.

While I was researching otter ecology in Arkansas it was helpful to me to understand their past distribution and relative abundance.
Otter place names pretty much occur from "sea to shining sea." Overlaying these localities with the known original scientific distribution of river otters (from E. Raymond Hall's 1981 work) in the U.S., it is a fair match.
There are a few otter place names in the Swedish word for otter, which is "utter." However, this may refer to the mammary gland of a cow also.

The Red River of the North (Red River) begins at Wahpeton at the confluence of the Otter Tail River, which originates in east-central Minnesota, and the Bois de Sioux River, which originates in northeastern South Dakota.
The Red River forms the boundary between North Dakota and Minnesota and flows north into Canada, meandering for 394 miles, which is nearly double the straight-line distance.
The Red River flows north through this plain to Lake Winnipeg because, despite the plain being very flat, a difference in elevation exists along the route of the river, making the line between southeastern North Dakota and Lake Winnipeg slightly downhill.
