Otterbourne village is about half way between Southampton and Winchester, and in the days before motorways, was an important staging post on the road from the strategic port of Southampton to the capital city of London.
Otterbourne is much quieter now than previously; the new motorway takes most of the traffic, but when the Yonges lived there, the road was an important and busy artery - goods, waggons and travellers rumbling past her windows every day, and resting overnight at the White Horse Inn on the other side of the road.
She is buried in Otterbourne Churchyard, near the east door of the church, surrounded by the graves of her family.

The boundaries of estates fixed those of parishes, and Otterbourne was curiously long and narrow, touching on Compton and Twyford to the north and north-west, on Stoneham to the south, and Hursley to the west, lying along the bank of the Itchen.

OTTERBOURNE is a village in Hampshire, situated approximately four miles south of Winchester and eight miles north of Southampton.
It has a flourishing school, Otterbourne C of E (Controlled) Primary School (http://www.schools.hants.org.uk/Otterbourne) and a church, St Matthew's, which was consecrated on its present site in 1838.
The Otter Bourne is the stream rising in the valley between Otterbourne and Hursley which runs initially eastwards through the village and then turns southwards, eventually joining the River Itchen near Brambridge House.

 Old Times at Otterbourne
A part of a Roman road has been traced in Otterbourne Park, and near it was found a piece of a quern, one of the old stones of a hand mill, such as was used in ancient times for grinding corn so that the place must have been inhabited at least seventeen hundred years ago.
The first Lord of Otterbourne must have had a very long narrow property, to judge by the form of the parish, which is at least three miles long, and nowhere a mile in breadth.
Part of the road between Hursley and Otterbourne, near Silkstede, is called King's Lane, because it is said to have been the way by which this strange hearse travelled.

The big news is that, for the first time ever, a team from Otterbourne won their group, (the mixed team) and were invited to take part in the final.
Otterbourne and Thornden took most (but not all) of the medals here with Kieran Radwell and Isabella Ford taking first in the primary age group and Mike Colyer and Monica Gash taking first in the secondary age group.
Otterbourne also won the primary school team trophy and Thornden the secondary school team trophy.

 Waste Management
Otterbourne Parish Council are to carry out their own census of traffic movement from the site through Otterbourne and Compton on Thursday 11 September.
A representative of Otterbourne Parish Council suggested that traffic problems through Otterbourne could be alleviated if HWS management instructed their drivers from north of the county to leave the motorway at junction 11 rather than junction 12 (Eastleigh North).
Cllr R Whitaker attended this meeting on 18 February, at Otterbourne Village Hall, at the invitation of Mr PD Briggs, Chairman of Otterbourne Parish Council, to hear a talk by Mr John Collis of Hampshire Waste Services/Integra, Poles Lane.

The battle itself was an effort of Percy to recover this valued piece of spoil, which, however, found its way to Scotland, notwithstanding the death of its captor.
The Otterbourne flag proves to be, not a spear-pennon, but a standard thirteen feet long, bearing the Douglas arms: it evidently has been Douglas's own banner, which of course his son would be most anxious to preserve and carry home.
The writer recalls with curious feelings having been, a few years ago, at a party in Edinburgh where were present the Duke of Northumberland, representative of the Percy of Otterbourne celebrity, and the younger Laird of Cavers, representative of the Douglas whose name, even when dead, won that hard-fought field.

To explain the present undertaking, it should be mentioned that a history of Hursley and North Baddesley was compiled by the Reverend John Marsh, Curate of Hursley, in the year 1808.
Boyat, or Bovières, as it once was called, had been a “hundred,” and was probably more of a village than at present, since up to 1840 there was a pound and stocks opposite to the single farm-house that remained.
A new era began in both Hursley and Otterbourne with the accession of Sir William Heathcote, the fifth baronet, and with the marriage of William Yonge.

The men were all neighbours, living in a row of cottages at Otterbourne.
They walked all around the Otterbourne area, from Shawford to Brambridge, and from Silkstead to Chandler's Ford, performing their play at every opportunity along the way.
