OttoBerman, nicknamed "Abbadabba," was a middle-aged accounting whiz who aligned himself with Schultz.
In a matter of seconds, Berman was able to mentally calculate the minimum amount of money Schultz would need to bet at the track at the last minute in order to alter the odds, thereby ensuring that he always controlled which numbers won.
Berman died four hours after he was wounded; meanwhile, Rosenkrantz was taken into surgery, where doctors found themselves unsure of where to start, considering the extent of his wounds.

Almost every evening he and his three closest associates, Bernard (Lulu) Rosenkrantz, his second in command, Otto (Abbadabba) Berman and Abe (Misfit) Landau (AKA Abe Frank), would meet at the Palace Chop House around the corner on Park Street.
When the police queried Rosenkrantz, he continued to refuse to answer any of their questions, and repeatedly demanded an ice cream soda.
At 3:00am Berman was the second to die, never having regained consciousness.
Eventually, a budding romance begins between Billy and Drew, though it seems apparent that she is too flighty to really care deeply for him — or anyone else for that matter.
"Billy Bathgate" is filled with interesting characters: OttoBerman (Steven Hill), Dutch's chief aide, who feels some paternal responsibility for Billy; hitman Irving (Steve Buscemi, memorable as the bellboy in "Barton Fink"), who at first is an idol, then a nemesis of Billy's; and a bevy of smaller roles filled by seasoned character actors.
The lead roles are all well-handled, with newcomer Dean making Billy an appealing youth, whose clean-scrubbed innocence provides an odd counterpoint to his yearning to be a mobster.

He and Mendy Weiss entered the Palace Chophouse in Newark, NJ (Schultz was facing additional state tax charges in New York and decided to remain in New Jersey until Dewey was out of the way).
The two men shot down three of Schultz's top men, Otto "Abbadabba" Berman, Lulu Rosenkranz and Abe Landau.
They then found Dutch Schultz in the rest room and mortally wounded him.

She of course develops a certain fondness, and a lack of modesty, towards young Billy, who is given her care during much of the film.
(Kidman's brief but complete nude scenes were apparently a first for Disney-owned Touchstone.) Steven Hill, as OttoBerman, is very good as Dutch's stolid business manager.
Billy Bathgate doesn't break new ground in the gangster genre and its pace is a little slow at times, but it'll absorb you into the story regardless until its abrupt, somewhat unsatisfying end.
