  Scharnhorst - The History - The Scharnhorst at Brest, France
Ciliax was one of the few senior officers who not only believed the Channel dash possible, he was actually enthusiastic about it.
The plan, as Ciliax told his captains and heads of departments on his return from East Prussia, was that Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen should leave Brest on the night of 11 February with an escort of six destroyers.
Ciliax's fleet was now freed from the danger of an early torpedo attack.

  Otto Ciliax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Otto Ciliax (30 October 1891 - 12 December 1964) was an admiral in the German Navy.
In February 1942, he commanded Operation Cerberus, better known as "the Channel Dash", when Germany's two battlecruisers, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, one heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and a number of other smaller ships fled from Brest to return to German waters farther from allied bombers.
Ciliax flew his flag from Scharnhorst, which had formerly been commanded by him.

Following his orders, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Scheer and Prinz Eugen, accompanied by an armada of smaller warships and under a broad umbrella of fighter-escorts, left their French anchorage to sail under the very noses of their enemies through the English Channel on the evening of February 11, 1942.

On 29th December 1941, Hitler insisted on the ships being brought back to the North Sea, or the ships being paid off, having all of their main armaments removed for coastal defence in Norway, and the hulls scrapped.
On 12th January, Vizeadmiral Ciliax agreed to the concept of sending the ships through the Channel, providing that they were guaranteed air cover by the Luftwaffe.
General Jeschonnek agreed to provide 250 fighters between Brest and Hamburg.
