Hajós beat Herschmann by less than a body length.
Neumann added Austria's first gold medal to Herschmann's silver.
Hajós, who had intended to sweep the three open swimming events, did not compete in the 500 because it was begun immediately after the 100 metres.

 Otto Herschmann
Herschmann is one of only three athletes to have won Olympic medals in different sports.
He won a bronze medal swimming the 100-Meter Freestyle in 1896 at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens and a silver medal in Team Sabre (fencing) at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm.
Dr. Herschmann was arrested in Vienna by the Nazis and deported on January 14th, 1942 to the Sobibor concentration camp.

In 1904, Austria was only represented by two athletes: Otto Wahle, swimming, and Julius Lenhart, gymnastics, who was quoted as a US citizen in the international record-statistics by mistake, he was living in the USA, but had never been a US-citizen.
On April 16th, 1912, the "Central Committee" organised a big banquet in the honour of it's Honorary President, Fürst Otto Windischgraetz and of Graf Rudolf Colloredo-Mannsfeld (IOC Member).
At this time Dr. Otto Herschmann became President of the NOC and was also a member of the Olympic Team.

One member of the Austrian team that finished second in the team fencing event was Otto Herschmann, who was, at that time, president of the Austrian Olympic Committee.

Otto F. Kernberg, was born in Vienna in 1928 and in 1939 his family left Germany to escape the Nazi regime and emigrated to Chile where he later studied biology and medicine and afterwards psychiatry and psychoanalysis with the Chilean Psychoanalytic Society.
He first went to the US in 1959 on a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship to study research in psychotherapy with Jerome Frank at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Other major psychiatrists who contributed to the theory are Melanie Klein, Karen Horney, Heinz Kohut, Otto F. Kernberg, Theodore Millon, Elsa F. Ronningstam, John Gunderson, and Robert Hare.
