Originally the western part of the Landgraviate of Thuringia, in the mid 13th Century it was inherited by the younger son of Henry II, Duke of Brabant, and became a distinct political entity.
In the early 19th century the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel was elevated to Elector of Hesse (1803), while the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt became the Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine (1806).

Hesse, the only son, received his education in the public schools of his native city, and upon leaving school became associated with his father in the carriage and wagon manufacturing business, learning every branch of the business from a mechanical standpoint, flsmithing, wood working, painting and trimming.
Hesse is also one of the five directors of the Wulfekhuler State Bank of Leavenworth, which has a capital stock of $150,000, and deposits of over $1,400,000.

Early Hesse was the district around the Fulda, the Werra, the Eder and the Lahn, and was part of the Frankish kingdom both during Merovingian and during Carolingian times.
The Hessians were converted to Christianity mainly through the efforts of St Boniface; their land was included in the archbishopric of Mainz; and religion and culture were kept alive among them largely owing to the foundation of the Benedictine abbeys of Fulda and Hersfeld.
In the following year Sophia handed over Hesse to her son Henry (1244-1308), who, remembering the connection of Hesse and Thuringia,,took the title of landgrave, and is the ancestor of all the subsequent rulers of the country.
