He was the son of a rabbi, cousin to the famous conductor Otto Klemperer and brother to the surgeon Georg Klemperer, who was a personal physician to Lenin.
Klemperer kept a diary, which from 1933 through the end of the war, provides a unique day-to-day account of life under tyranny and the struggle for survival among Jews in the Third Reich.
Klemperer went on to become a significant post-war cultural figure in East Germany, lecturing at the universities of Greifswald, Berlin and Halle.

Otto Klemperer (May 14, 1885 – July 6, 1973) was a German-born conductor and composer.
Klemperer went on to hold a number of posts, including conductorships in Hamburg (1910 1912); in Barmen (1912 1913); the Strasbourg Opera (1914 1917); the Cologne Opera (1917 1924); and the State Opera in Wiesbaden (1924 1927).
Late in his life, Klemperer suffered from partial paralysis which had largely been brought on as a result of surgery in 1939 to remove a tumor on his brain; surgery which also made his bipolar disorder rather more prominent.

Otto Nossan Klemperer was born May 14, 1885 in the town then known as Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), the second child and only son of Ida and Nathan Klemperer.
Otto attended the Hamburg Stiftungsschule which, under the forward-looking headmastership of Otto's relative, Anton Rée, broke with tradition and offered a free education to children of all faiths.
The teen-aged Klemperer soon established himself as a pianist of note, performing Beethoven's Sonata in D major in a conservatory concert and serving as accompanist to the celebrated baritone Julius Stockhausen.
