Schreier   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Schreier was offered a professorship at the University of Rostock in 1928 and decided to accept the position but he preferred to wait until the summer of 1929 before taking up the post.
Schreier will be best remembered for his work on subgroups of free groups which he studied in his habilitation thesis.
Schreier, who took a more algebraic approach compared to Reidemeister's geometrical approach, was able to extend Reidemeister's method to arbitrary subgroups and, by cleverly choosing generators for the subgroup, was able to greatly simplify the presentation obtained.

Jakob Nielsen (mathematician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The next year he published a paper in Mathematisk Tidsskrift in which he proved that any subgroup of a finitely generated free group is free.
In 1926 Otto Schreier would generalize this result by removing the condition that the free group be finitely generated; this result is now known as the Nielsen-Schreier theorem.
Also in 1921 Nielsen moved to the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, where he would stay until 1925, when he moved to the Technical University in Copenhagen.

Artin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
By this stage he had proved, using very clever arguments with Galois theory and Cauchy's theorem on subgroups of prime order, that O had to be an extension of K of degree 2 and that the subfield K had to have the property that -1 could not be expressed as a sum of squares.
The earlier research by Artin and Schreier had led them to define what today are called formally real fields, they are fields with the property that -1 cannot be expressed as a sum of squares.
Artin and Schreier published in their famous 1926 paper their studies of all formally real fields and real closed fields, showing that a specific ordering could be defined on them.

Considered the Charlemagne of Germany, Otto I (936-73) was only twenty-four years old at the time of his accession, but he was already a king in conduct and facility.
It was through his canny state-craft and iron will that Otto I became the first Holy Roman Emperor and earned the appellation Otto the Great.
At the end of the 15th century, in the glorious period known as the Renaissance, the German states in the Holy Roman Empire lacked strong, unified central governments and local nobles or small political units fragmented political authority.
