Otto Neumann Sverdrup (1854–1930) was a native of Bindal, Nordland county, Norway, known for his achievements within the areas of Arctic science and exploration.
Sverdrup's fourth and last expedition in Arctic Siberian waters was in 1921, when, from the bridge of the Soviet icebreaker Lenin, he commanded a convoy of five cargo ships on an experimental run through the Kara Sea to the mouths of the Ob and Yenisei.

Otto Sverdrup during his lifetime (1872 - 1928) was as famous an explorer as Nansen and Amundsen, though since then, he has been overshadowed by his compatriots.
Sverdrup had previously crossed the Greenland icefield with Nansen in 1888, and like Nansen, this journey had made his name in polar exploration circles.

Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (November 15, 1888 – August 21, 1957) was a Norwegian oceanographer and meteorologist who made a number of important theoretical discoveries in these fields.
Having first worked in Bergen and Leipzig he was involved in the North Polar expedition of Roald Amundsen between 1917 and 1925, before taking the chair in meteorology at Bergen, where his primary interest slowly became oceanography.
He was made director of California's Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) in 1936, initially for 3 years but the intervention of World War II meant he held the post until 1948.
