Otto Wallach Biography | World of Scientific Discovery
Otto Wallach was born on March 27, 1847, in Königsberg, in East Prussia (Königsberg is now called Kaliningrad and is part of the reorganized former Soviet Union).
A very patient researcher, Wallach distilled and redistilled each oil sample until he could identify a pure substance.
By 1887 Wallach discovered that all the terpenes he identified in essential oils are derived from a multiple of a particular arrangement of five carbon atoms, now called isoprene units.

 Organic Chemistry 331
Otto Wallach (who, interestingly, began his graduate studies in chemistry under the direction of Friedrich Wöhler, of urea synthesis fame), turned his attention to the terpenes at the suggestion of August Kekulé (of fame for his proposal of the cyclic structure of benzene, allegedly following an opium-induced dream of a snake biting its own tail).
In what might appear to be an incident of a "make-work" research suggestion, Kekulé directed Wallach to a series of old samples of essential oils which had been isolated by steam distillation of various plant materials, but apparently not studied to any great extent.
Indeed, more do exist, and a number of other isomeric terpenes have in fact since been discovered.) These early studies led Wallach down a long and prolific journey down the road of terpene chemistry, culminating in his receipt of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1910 for his work in this area.
