OTTO OF GREECE FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Otto of Wittelsbach, Prince of Bavaria and King of Greece (Salzburg, June_1, 1815 - Bamberg, July_26, 1867) was made the first modern king of Greece in 1832 under the Convention of London, whereby Greece became a new independent kingdom under the protection of the United_Kingdom, France and Russia.
Through his ancestor the Bavarian Duke John II Wittelsbach, Otto was a descendant of the Greek Imperial dynasties of Comnenos and Laskaris.
As a staunch Catholic, and thus considered a heretic among the Greeks, he never changed his religion since he was guaranteed, under the constitutional provisions as the first King of a new Greek dynasty, that he could remain a Catholic.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Otto IV
Otto and his followers hoped that Pope Innocent III, who was hostile to the Hohenstaufens, would espouse Otto's cause in the contest for the German throne.
Otto had made the broadest concessions to the Holy See, wishing "to become King of the Romans through the favour of God and the pope".
Otto's next step was to take as his wife the daughter of his murdered enemy, which was an added incentive to the Hohenstaufens to yield themselves to his sway.
