Guardian | The Merry Wives of Windsor
But none of that has prevented Otto Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor from being regularly compared with Verdi's Falstaff and, because the latter is one of opera's masterpieces, from always ending up the loser.
In German-speaking countries The Merry Wives just about keeps a toehold in the repertory but elsewhere all that's usually heard of it is the overture.
The cast - James Rutherford as a youthful Falstaff, Helen Williams and Yvonne Howard as the merry wives, Roderick Earle and Mark Richardson their less-than-merry husbands - is a classy one, and with John Graham-Hall the suitably gangling Slender and Gail Pearson a diminutive Anne Page, it has real strength in depth.

Composer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
A native of Königsberg, Otto Nicolai was educated largely in Berlin, through the intervention of a sympathetic patron, and made a name for himself there, without great material success.
A period in Rome as organist at the Prussian Embassy aroused his interest in opera, an enthusiasm he was able to pursue at the Court Opera in Vienna, finally, in the year before his death, achieving the position of director of the Berlin Cathedral choir and Kapellmeister of the Berlin Opera.
Nicolai is best known for his opera based on Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, rejected by the opera in Vienna, but first performed in Berlin in March 1849, two months before Nicolai's early death.

The mood lightens with the next work, the 'Merry Waltz,' which is just that; it's a knock-off of Richard Strauss's waltzes (think 'Rosenkavalier' or 'Arabella') and not bad, either.
Alun Francis and his Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz play with conviction and skill, and the recorded sound, although a little recessed, is good at the proper volume setting.
I'd advise anyone intensely interested in hearing what Klemperer had to say as a composer to look for his own recording of his Second Symphony and the 'Merry Waltz.' Presumably, master conductor that he was, he got what he wanted from an orchestra in his own works.

When this recording was made, "The Merry Widow" was a relative newcomer to the repertory of the Vienna State Opera, which in earlier days had taken a very top-lofty attitude toward such trifles as mere operetta.

'Wives' production full of zest / Merola singers make most of opera
In a dexterously executed version of the piece at the College of Marin in Kentfield (the production was unveiled a week earlier at Stern Grove), the talented young cast made light work of this ebullient and elegant entertainment.
Nicolai's 1849 score, a fizzy, fluent blend of Italianate lyricism and Germanic density, has never been as popular in this country as in Europe, and it can be hard not to hear it through the scrim of Verdi's "Falstaff," which makes something far richer out of some of the same source material.
But as Sunday's performance demonstrated, "The Merry Wives" captures the gist of Shakespeare's breathless comic spirit and isn't particularly weakened by the lack of a Verdian Falstaff.

Yet even with their courage and passionate loyalty, the forces of men--with Eowyn (Otto) and Merry (Monaghan) hidden among them--are no match for the enemies swarming against Gondor.
Still, in the face of great losses, they charge forward into the battle of their lifetimes, tied together by their singular goal to keep Sauron distracted and give the Ring Bearer a chance to complete his quest.
Similarly, Merry and Pippin look forward to the day they can relax “back at the Green Dragon after a hard day’s work.” So it’s a shock to Sam and Frodo –- and dismaying to the audience -– when they realize they aren’t going to need food for the return trip.
