Ouahigouya is the most important town in northern Burkina Faso.
The city was founded in 1757 as the capital of Yatenga, but was destroyed in 1825 and repeatedly attacked from the 1870s to the 1890s, until the French began rebuilding around a fort from 1896.
Features of Ouahigouya include Kaba Kango's tomb, the Yatenga Naba's compound and an artificial lake.

Ouahigouya, with a population of 50,000 in 1992, is the capital of Yatenga province, which has been particularly hard hit by drought.
The project was hampered by a lack of participation and prior awareness among the population regarding the choice of sites, the inauguration of the public standpipes, the concept of paying for water, water management, the impact of water on health, and so on.
Concerted action with the Provincial Health Department (DPS) of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare at Ouahigouya is necessary so that water analysis and quality control by DPS continue and the areas of health education and environmental hygiene aspect are taken care of.

Ouahigouya (Burkina Faso), Dec 13, GNA - The Wa Municipal Assembly on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ouahigouya, the capital of the Yatenga Province of Burkina Faso, as sister cities.
Ouahigouya is about 180 kilometres north of Ouogadougou and is the third largest city in Burkina Faso.
He said the relationship would also be used as a springboard towards the re-establishment of good relationship that existed between the two countries before colonization.

Wa, Sept. 8, GNA - The sister-city relationship between Wa in the Upper West Region and Ouahigouya in the Yatenga Province of Burkina Faso was formalised on Tuesday with the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between the two cities.
A delegation from the Wa Municipal Assembly would leave for Ouahigouya on September 27, to join city authorities there to perform a similar function, the MCE announced.
He gave an assurance of the preparedness of the Burkinabe authorities to work with their Ghanaian counterparts on both sides of their common border to promote the development of their people.
