Oudenaarde had a flourishing tapestry-weaving industry between the 15th and the 18th century.
The decree was in force in Oudenaarde on 1 January 1545 and from that moment the weavers of Oudenaarde were forced to weave the new municipal mark and weavers marks into the borders of the tapestries.
During his stay in Oudenaarde in 1521 the daughter of weaver van der Gheynste becomes his mistress and from this relationship his daughter and later governess Margaretha of Parma was born in 1522.

When French troops annexed Oudenaarde at the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV of France demanded that the Oudenaarde tapestry weavers went to France to help their colleagues in Beauvais and Gobelin save their dying tapestry industry.

Passing through the vaulted halls on the ground floor we enter the Great Hall (Volkszaal) with a balcony overlooking the market, and which is heated by means of a great Late-Gothic fireplace by the Oudenaarde sculptor Pauwel van der Schelden.
The same sculptor was responsible for the porch at the entrance door of the courtroom (Schepenzaal); here should be noted the original oak floor and the pictures: Charles VI, Louis XIV on horseback, Oudenaarde in the 18th C., and some examples from the school of Adriaan Brouwers.

On Tuesday, the people of Oudenaarde, a city freed during battles that stretched to Armistice Day, honored the soldiers who fired some of the final shots of World War I. “We are grateful for what happened between 1914 and 1918,” ceremony organizer Jean-Pierre D’Beweer said.
More than 2,600 American soldiers were killed during the Ypres-Lys offensive, which had pushed into Oudenaarde by Nov. 11, 1918, the day hostilities ceased and an armistice was declared.
