Founded in the late 12th century as a small fishing village on the banks of the Amstel, it is now the largest city in the country and its financial and cultural centre.
Legend has it that Amsterdam was founded by two Frisian fisherman, who landed on the shores of the Amstel in a small boat with their dog.
The damming of the river Amstel gave it its name.
