		A HISTORY OF OUR LADY HELP OF Our Lady Help of Christians Parish and School are located in the beautiful suburban village of Abington, Pennsylvania.
		Our Lady Help of Christians was founded in 1953, with Monsignor Joseph D. Shallow as the first pastor.
		Our Lady Help of Christians School is moving into the twenty-first century by preparing our students to meet the challenges ahead.

		Mary’s title Help of Christians is one of the invocations in the well-known Litany of Loretto (also known as the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary).
		Pope St. Pius V inserted the title of Help of Christians in the litany in 1571 in thanksgiving to Our Lady for the victory of the inferior Christian fleet over the Muslim Turks at the Battle of Lepanto.
		In 1624, the Catholics of Passau, Bavaria enshrined a picture of Mary Help of Christians from the 15 th century in a newly built Shrine to Mary Help of Christians.

		The feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, was instituted by Pope Pius VII.
		In January 1814, after the battle of Leipzig, he was brought back to Savona and set free on 17 March, the eve of the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, the patroness of Savona.
		To give thanks to God and Our Lady he instituted the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians for the Papal States on 15 September 1815; is was celebrated on 24 May, the anniversary of his first return.

		Also at the back of the church, there is a statue of Mary, Help of Christians.

		The feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, was instituted by Pius VII.
		To give thanks to God and Our Lady he (15 Sept., 1815) instituted for the Papal States the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, to be celebrated, 24 May, the anniversary of his first return.
		This feast is the patronal feast of Australasia, a double of the first class with an octave (Ordo Australasiae, 1888), and in accordance with a vow (1891) is celebrated with great splendour in the churches of the Fathers of the Foreign Missions of Paris.

		Saint Pius V gave Mary the title: "Help of Christians," after the victory of the Christian fleet over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571, and he added this invocation to her litany.
		The invocation of Mary as Help of Christians is part of the oldest prayer addressed directly to Mary, the "Sub tuum praesidium," which was found on a papyrus dating, at the latest, from the end of the third century.
		Yet, Mary help of all Christians is not only helpful to those engaged in new wars, as the Gospel shows quite clearly.

		Mementos of OLHC including splinters from the cross that hung above the altar, scrolls with the names of all who were buried from OLHC since 1907, coins depicting Our Lady Help of Christians and The Holy Family, and pictures of the Church are available to anyone who would like to have them.
