For Our Town is as certifiably a classic as anything the American theater–or even all of American popular culture, for that matter–has ever produced.
Those who like their theatrical classics tampered with and "re-imagined" will be disappointed, because this is Our Town in a super-straightforward and unfettered presentation; I submit that’s the best way to view this play, actually, and James Naughton’s staging pays homage to Jed Harris’s original, innovative-for-its-time production.

Our Town article by dramaturg, Gregory Kable
Wilder's America, far from a provincial, reactionary, and nostalgic community as it is often misperceived, is an ideal embracing a wide array of influences, and it is significant that his archetypal American play was inspired by the stagecraft of China and Japan, as well as the English Renaissance, the Spanish Golden Age, and Luigi Pirandello.
Our Town premiered at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey in January 1938, to a chilly reception.
Wilder's fictional town of Grover's Corners in an amalgam of many different real-life communities; it is also a palimpsest or a multi-layered vision of America through time, the fruit of Wilder's fascination with archaeology.
