  Insane Films: Ourmedia Still Not Working
I've been trying to tell people to use ourmedia but invariably they tell me that it's frustrating and does not work.
But hopefully we will get the uploading to work properly now (status is that on-site uploading of files of max 10 megs should work, whereas Ourmedia Publisher still is bugged), and then we can focus on some of the other features.
Ourmedia will be a good thing, bad PR today or not.

Unlike the storage and distribution aspects of OurMedia (which can essentially be operated through an API in the near future), blogging and citizen journalism require a lot more of the “total experience” in order to work.
OurMedia will probably take the same approach to combating this sort of thing as it takes with other violations in that it will offer a “report abuse” button.
OurMedia is headed in the right direction nevertheless, and I intend to assist them by volunteering my programming services (and any other way I can help them).

Ourmedia is a site that allows you to post all kinds of digital media, for free.
The fact that the Internet Archive is stable is irrelevant; Ourmedia will require a ton of cash on its own, and while it's very sweet for all the investors to keep pouring money in, eventually it will have to shut if it doesn't at least break even.
Ourmedia's solution is akin to people signing up to Compuserve or AOL and joining its embedded communities, all stored in a little walled garden; it doesn't use the Internet to its fullest, and I think in a couple of years we'll have moved on to something much better.

So, I signed up for OurMedia, I think that really has some promise.
It is still only in alpha now, and it’s a real alpha, not one of those where everything works fine, but I think the idea is great.
I would rather see it less reliant on the goodwill of internet archive, and more distributed, but the idea that they are eventually going to is to have ourmedia act more like a DNS server for content that could be housed on any server, including p2p systems.

I'm entirely distrustful of it, simply because it'll be a central store of data, which is great until there's some kind of funding problem and the whole thing has to be dismantled.
Ourmedia could find some sponsorship from a tech company looking for a PR halo effect.
The "How to register" page doesn't seem to be linked to from the ourmedia registration form, though this information is in the email you receive upon registering for an ourmedia.org account.

Keith: No doubt that the raw and unfocused state of the interface is hiding a lot of OurMedia's potential right now, but looking behind the curtain, it's the volunteer, non-profit nature of this that makes it a force to be reckoned with in my opinion.
Looking at all the smart people who are involved in the development of OurMedia, it's hard for me to believe they haven't already sorted some of this stuff out.
Lastly, signal to noise, if the web at large has one meaningful site in 10,000 much of that is because there are people actually paying to have their sites designed, built, hosted, etc. OurMedia, by providing free access to all, removes this important filter, and the result is a LOT of JUNK.

Ourmedia provides a front end that allows more metadata, easier searching, and more interaction.
I’ve come to a greater understanding of Ourmedia over the last few days by talking to one of it’s developers and doing some more thorough research.

When I first found out about OurMedia, I was excited because it was just what I was looking for in order to host some photographs online.
You’d think that the app would be able to find out the filetype from the extension on my images or at least allow me to select the same filetype for all my images.
