 All about the Area
Out Skerries, Shetland's most easterly outpost, has a wealth of attractions never to be forgotten - the dramatic scenery, historical interest, outstanding wildlife and, not least, the warm welcome of the Skerries folk.
A skerry is a rocky island or islet, it is often assumed that the 'Out Skerries' were so named because of the islands' remoteness, but in fact it stems from the Norse word for cast, distinguishing Out Skerries from the likes of the Ve, or west Skerries.
Economically, socially, spiritually, Out Skerries boasts a community which has always lived for the present and the future.

Add to this the angling marks within the area which are protected; the Skerries, the Ray Pits; the Ridd; Prawle Banks; Lannacombe Back; the Catterns (west of Salcombe); and the East and West Rutts; and any fair minded person would agree that recreational sea anglers have benefited enormously (probably without realizing it) from DSFC legislation.
The whole of the ocean is available for that purpose, so why single out the already damaged "Skerries" banks, which are largely subject to a "No Trawling at Any Time" box and support the dwindling local fleet of charter boats that depend on their proximity and fish for a major proportion of their livelihood.
