Out of Sight (1998)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
A career bank robber breaks out of jail and shares a moment of mutual attraction with a US Marshall he has kidnapped.
Back when she used to have a little (now she has a lot), Jennifer Lopez was actually enjoyable in Steven Soderbergh's 'Out of Sight.' I saw this in the theater when it came out and remember thinking it was one of the better films I'd seen that year.
One critic gave the film two and a half out of four stars and claimed 'Out of Sight' was in need of a 'shot of adrenaline,' but I have no idea where he's coming from.

There's nothing adolescent about the sex appeal of "Out of Sight." The allure of the movie is seeing two adults who are as smitten as teenagers yet never lose the grounded quality that makes them so appealing in the first place.
What makes "Out of Sight" a grown-up treat is that the mixture of lust and longing is as flawlessly proportioned as the ingredients in a perfect cocktail.
"Out of Sight" is definitely not the gradually overwhelming letdown that happens when filmmakers botch an adaptation of a thriller that reads like a movie.

 Out of Sight (book)
The premise of Out of Sight is that this comparatively short period, 1889-1895, was pivotal in the birth of African American music.
Out of Sight is a beautifully constructed work, right down to its very deliberate choice of title.
Far from a dry, historical record, Out of Sight makes utterly compulsive reading, and throughout the book there will be many echoes for people, like me, who have spent years immersed in the better documented eras of Black music, in the first half of the 20th century.

Out of Sight scored critical raves, but its title sums up the theatrical fate of Steven Soderbergh's coolly comic crime caper and misfit romance based on Elmore Leonard's novel.
Out of Sight is a rich, entertaining film, stylish without being showy, faithful to the integrity of Leonard's potent dialogue and quirky characters, and seamlessly acted by a dream ensemble.

If that's the case, then we should realize the consequences and the need to do something to insure that those who are increasingly making the decisions-- the contractors-- are subject to rules that will provide for accountability.
In the U.S., contracting out is really not privatization in the sense that we're saying to the private sector, "You go do it and let the market take care of it." If the contractor fails, we've got to pick up the pieces.

The latest Leonard book to be adapted for the big screen by writer Scott Frank ("Get Shorty"), "Out of Sight" has wit, character and sass, but uses all of them too sparingly -- like one episode of a show that's trying to spread the good bits over an entire season.
