To contrast and shed light on the spiritual plaques of Earth, the author created the planet of Malacandra to portray a utopian world where the inhabitants live together in peace instead of in fear and separation.
Because of Earth's evil, the other planets and spirits in the universe cannot hear the cries from this "silent" planet.

Literary Encyclopedia: Out of the Silent Planet
Out of the Silent Planet is not, however, strictly (or mainline) science fiction itself.
In Out of the Silent Planet a middle aged professor, Elwin Ransom, who reminds one of both Lewis and J. Tolkien, is kidnapped by a scientist and an adventurer (Edward Rolles Weston and Richard Devine) and taken with them on a space vehicle to Mars (though they initially give only its solar name, “Malacandra”).
After that occurred it was called the “silent planet”, because it was fallen, out of touch and communication with the rest of the universe.

Back to the Garden: the Eden Myth in Out of the Silent Planet
In Out of the Silent Planet, however, Lewis upsets this notion and instead gives the reader an otherworldly yet beautiful description of the Martian landscape of Malacandra, with a subtle, silent nod in the direction of previous authors who have traditionally portrayed the planet as lifeless and dead.
A third element of the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden that is represented in Out of the Silent Planet is the absence of the knowledge of sin or evil and the resulting absence of any manifestation of sin or evil until it is introduced by an outside force.
Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet would be a good science fiction genre novel on the basis of its plot alone, but it is the moral dimension of this novel that makes it stand out as a work of quality literature.

Critical Summary and Overview - Surprised by Joy
In a varied and comprehensive writing career, Lewis carved out a sterling reputation as a scholar, a novelist, and a theologian for three very different audiences.
He thus rejected out of hand the notion that an artist was obligated to lay bare the private life--either for the sake of celebrity or for its putative insights into his or her literary works.
Freed from the notion that the past was invariably wrong and that the present always the barometer of truth, Lewis was able to confront the possibility that Christian message could have validity even in the twentieth century.

CBU - Honors Journal - Out of the Silent Planet: A Journey to the Medieval Past - Randy Hude
Seen from this angle, the narrative of Out of the Silent Planet can be viewed as a description not only of Ransom's adventures but also of Lewis's own search for the sense of order, duty, and obedience which pervaded the medieval past.
One of the ways he does this is through stories like Out of the Silent Planet that reexamine old truths, and question whether they are actually worth discarding.
Accepting this view makes sense out of the final sentence of the novel, written by Ransom to Lewis the narrator: "The way to the planets lies through the past; if there is to be any more space-travelling, it will have to be time-travelling as well" (160).
