Bio: OutKast's blend of gritty Southern soul, fluid raps, and the rolling G-funk of their Organized Noize production crew epitomized the Atlanta wing of hip-hop's rising force, the Dirty South, during the late '90s.
OutKast returned with a new album in 1996, releasing ATLiens that August; it hit number two and went platinum with help from the gold-selling single "Elevators (Me & You)" (number 12 pop, number one rap), as well as the Top 40 title track.
Unfortunately, in a somewhat bizarre turn of events, OutKast was sued over the album's lead single, "Rosa Parks," by none other than the civil rights pioneer herself, who claimed that the group had unlawfully appropriated her name to promote their music, also objecting to some of the song's language.

 Outkast: Idlewild: Pitchfork Record Review
Outkast have never made the same album twice, and each new one requires that you go to the mountain your own damn self.
Idlewild is the soundtrack to Outkast’s forthcoming film of the same name, which means a lot of it is only vaguely comprehensible for those of us who haven’t seen its parent flick (which, at this point, is all of us).
People who hate on Outkast haters get a lot of mileage out of the fallacy that people dislike the idea of two men attempting to poke day-glo exclamation points through the restrictive language of 21st century rap.

For nearly ten years, Outkast has done what few hip-hop groups have been able to: grow as artists and push the limits of the genre without losing their core fan base.
And long time Outkast fans will be rewarded with a blast from the past on the contemplatively soulful "Reset", which uses the soulfully airy minimalism of ATLiens, a perfect juxtaposition to the sonic circus that is the rest of the album rest of the album.
If OutKast could put so much of their heart and soul forth and put together such a perfect funky, soul, ride of a double album and still teach, move, and inspire so much than there is no telling what I or anyone else could really do.

OutKast doesn't live up to its great songs
OutKast, hip-hop's reigning duo, have released a string of four albums that, to varying degrees, ponder ghetto life from an otherworldly vantage in the tradition of Sun Ra, George Clinton and Afrika Bambaata, climaxing with their release of last year, Stankonia.
But judging by its Thursday night show at the Firstar Center, when it comes to live performances the duo is only as good as their songs — pretty much like any other hip-hop band.
OutKast, known individually as Big Boi and Dre, tried to dress up the proceedings: In addition to their DJ, two guitarists were on hand, as were three backup singers.
