Outokumpu's first shipment, 60 tonnes of copper ingots, was sold in St. Petersburg in June, 1914 (Finland was part of the Russian Empire from 1809 until 1917).
He was to have a tremendous impact on Outokumpu's development as its president and leader for decades until his death in 1953; without his vision and persistence, the struggling company would have failed on several occasions.
Outokumpu's strong export orientation was already visible in the 1920s: raw ore was sold to Germany, and refined copper was sold to Sweden.
