Outrigger Canoe Racing is a team (Click link for more info and facts about paddling) paddling (An active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition) sport which utilises the (A seagoing canoe (as in South Pacific) with an outrigger to prevent it from upsetting) outrigger canoe.
As a standard outrigger canoe contains six seats, crew changovers during longer races involve exit and entry to the canoe directly from the water while the canoe is underway.
As an outrigger is a long narrow canoe with the steerer placed at the very end, the steerer must give instructions sufficently loudly and clearly for the entire crew to hear.

 B3 / K3 Outrigger Attachment Modification
Although the outrigger is designed to be easily removed and installed, there is a little bit of difficulty in doing so due to the stopped groove in the sliding table interfering with the alignment bolts imbedded in the outrigger.
It should be noted that since the outrigger can only be moved a relatively short distance back from the outfeed end of the slider, I did not bother to design the modification to accommodate a slider position other than at the extreme outfeed end.
The outrigger is shown in red, the attachment and jack bolts are green, and the T-nut and jack plate are the hatched blue areas.

An outrigger canoe is defined as a traditional canoe that includes in its design, a rig that extends laterally outwards and supports a flotation device.
The flotation device (known as an ama) is supported by two spars (known as iako) that are lashed across the gunwales of the canoe and extent outwards, usually to the left.
Though very fast, the problem with the double outrigger design was that in heavy seas, the primary hull could become suspended between two large waves which made manoeuvring impossible and often lead to snapping of the iakos.

 Hawaiian Outrigger History
The conception of an outrigger as a means of increasing stability is an advanced maritime architectural concept and it is supposed that the creation of the double outrigger canoe (an outrigger attachment rigged out on both sides of a single canoe) was the next stage in this development.
Outrigger canoe racing though taken seriously was still very much randomly practiced and it was not until 1922 that the first fully fledged regatta was staged.
Not until 1940 was it decided that outrigger canoe racing needed to have formalized rules and regulations to avoid some of the disagreements which began to arise as the sport took on greater status and importance.
