Outsider Art has not had the benefit of the unique protection surrounding Art Brut and the definition has undoubtedly become obscured by chronic mis-use since its introduction in 1972.
Outsider Art is virtually synonomous with Art Brut in both spirit and meaning, to that rarity of art produced by those who do not know its name.
Although Outsider Art has been used to describe the environments, some feel the label to be insulting to these particular creators, many of whom are integrated members of their local communities.

Indeed, the greatest outsider artist of all was British – the Victorian painter Richard Dadd, who was locked up as a criminal lunatic for killing his father, but went on to produce at least two world class Outsider Art masterpieces: The Fairy Feller’s Masterstroke (Tate Britain) and Oberon and Titania (Andrew Lloyd Webber collection).
Moreover, the first person to actually depict Outsider Art in the making was William Hogarth, who included a lunatic drawing on a wall in his 1735 engraving of the Royal Bethlem Hospital for the Insane (the painting was part of his sequence The Rake’s Progress).
Yet, the appalling fact is that the only place in the UK dedicated to Outsider Art is a tiny brown bungalow – perhaps known to regular FT readers [see FT137:48], but not to the general public – hidden away in the grounds of the new Royal Bethlem, in South London.

Art brut is known as Outsider Art in North America, and contemporary versions of the same phenomenon elsewhere are called Visionary Art, Intuitive Art, Grassroots Art, and Contemporary Folk Art.
The similarities between earlier art forms and Outsider Art are the childlike appearance of the art-work, the signature style of the artist, and choice of subject matter-- usually themes or obsessions concerning the everyday, or sometimes inner, life of the artist.
Outsider Art is, therefore, eccentric in the literal sense: It comes from outside of the centre, from the margins and from the edges of society, from the confined spaces of hospitals and institutions, and from the wide open spaces of the imagination in full, untutored and unfettered flight.

I have come to use the phrase Outsider Art to refer to the creative work of artists who are self-taught and/or those who, for a variety of reasons, are what I consider fortunately impervious to being taught how to make art.
The term Outsider Art is not always welcomed by all of the artists to whom it refers, nor do all collectors, dealers and protectors of the artists always like the term Outsider Art.
I think it is due to the fact that to participate in the Fine Art circuit is to be conversant with and to care about the issues and visual language of that particular audience.

In Roger Cardinal's seminal book "Outsider Art" published in 1972, he describes a "fantastic excursion into a world where hermits, madmen, dropouts, innocents and spiritual fanatics create their own widely imaginative art." Certainly, not all Outsider Art as we use the term today, is the product of the insane.
There are clear indications that this art will be absorbed into the wealth of strong and exceptional 20th and 21st century work, and the need for uncomfortable adjectives to describe it will diminish.
When such a person turns to art, there is a chance that the emotions surrounding the trauma will be revisited, possibly for the first time since the trauma itself.

The Outsider Art Fair is a once-a-year exposition of art put on by Sanford L. Smith and Associates, who also organize other categorical fairs, such as new art and antiques.
However, authentic folk art has been in high demand for some time, regardless of its aesthetic quality -- purely utilitarian milk cans which only a generation or two ago were put out of sight behind barns can be seen gracing the front steps of posh houses in expensive suburbs.
For example, the Outsider Art Fair had some very attractive work done in steel of various kinds by Haitian artists, but it wasn't totally unlike the work of, say, Lucas Samaras on the one hand, or traditional African sculpture on the other (except, of course, in price).

He called it Art Brut which roughly translated means raw art, but he very nicely described it as brut, as in champagne, that the best champagne is always brut.
And for him the best art is always self-taught and coming from an area that is totally disinterested in cultural issues and driven by people who are driven to create.
The pictures of Outsider Art more or less evoke other states and while those states make fine art and are rather promising they just represent something that most people would not like to really dwell on.
