Outsiders (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Outsiders is a fictional superhero team, produced by DC Comics, that has seen three different incarnations.
They first appeared in the final issue of The Brave and the Bold in 1983 and they were given their first comic, Batman and the Outsiders, which debuted in August 1983 and was created and originally written by Mike Barr and illustrated by Jim Aparo and then later illustrated by Alan Davis.
Outsiders volume 3, completely unrelated to the previous series, was launched in 2003, featuring new members, some of whom had previously been part of The Titans.

Dead Chicks & Mayhem: Outsiders #18 / DC
Of course kids aren't buying comics these days, so the creators of comics are gearing their stories to the audience that is supporting them with their dollars.
So if a particular story arc of a comic is going to be for mature audiences then the publisher should say so, to help consumers make informed choices.
Wertham was a little obsessive about 'seeing' things in comics that weren't there (erotic angles purely of his own projection), but what WAS there that he did criticise (gore-o-rama) was too strong for kids under 13, -unless they live in Iraq.

It was with the fact that we are two years into Outsiders and Judd Winick has done next to nothing in the way of character development and this is the story arc where it's coming back to bite him in the tuchus.
The Outsiders are half veterans and half Winick's creations and the first group has been largely unrecognizable and the latter undeveloped except for stock situations and cheap comic relief.
Outsiders has generally been somewhere between meh and turbo-nuclear-Dark Shrew, so even rising to the range of a very flawed okay is something of an achievement to be celebrated.

Grace, the team's powerhouse, is particularly outraged by the discovery, eventually telling teammate and sometime lover Arsenal that she was in fact abducted and sexually abused by the same ring when she was a child.
Comics have been dealing with such issues for years, with varying degrees of success.
Outsiders is one of D.C.’s gems, and Winick’s energy has become infectious.

Things will continue much as they are, which is to say, comics will go on catering to an obscure, cultish group of freaks and geeks, a mix of aging nostalgists, horny teen-age boys and social rebels.
Comics creators will continue to produce inbred, self-referential comics that are unfathomable to outsiders.
The pessimists in the industry have concluded that comic books are an artifact of the past, a quaint holdover from an era of low-tech amusements, soon to go the way of scooters and tops.

Outsiders #18 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
After a careful study of a store's video footage we see the Outsiders and John Walsh are able to uncover the identity of a man who abducted a young girl.
We than see "America's Most Wanted" is used to locate this criminal, and the Outsider are able to bust up yet another child abduction ring, but Grace remains frustrated by the idea that they haven't captured the man in charge.
I mean this is a man who has made it his life's work to bring criminals to justice, and yet he barely registers any emotional response when he's given a glimpse at the perfect crime fighting technology.

I think comics should better reflect our readership and our readership, despite their age, is more mature than fifteen years ago.
If you're a fan of any of the old "Outsiders" series, Winick says he will be keeping you in mind but he also promises not to dismiss any new fans by expecting them to know anything about past incarnations of the team.
The artist on "Outsiders" is another newly DC exclusive creator, Tom Raney, and from the way Winick's talking, the penciller may just be turning in the best work of his life on this series.

In an origin contrived even by super hero comics standards, Batman and the Outsiders all meet in the foreign country of Markovia where they happen to be strolling around at the same time and place.
Levitz’ JSA was a divided family, not in the Tolstoy sense, because this was a 1970's super-hero comic and things always worked out well, or at least relatively well, in the end, but in the "we have issues to sort out but in the end we'll be friends" sense.
All-Star Comics 59-60, the 2nd and 3rd issues in the revival were, like the first revival issue, written and edited by Gerry Conway.

ICv2 Talk Back - Buddy Saunders of Lone Star Comics on Outsiders #8
Comic retailers are likewise deprived of these younger customers who, if they follow in our footsteps, will spend thousands of dollars on comics in the years to come--hopefully in our stores.
Last time I looked, the comic book business wasn't awash in customers, but even if it were, it would still make no sense to be hostile or indifferent to the sensibilities of any patron.
The first Lone Star Comics store opened in the summer of 1977 in a hole-in-the-wall-sized location on a dead end side street and was bankrolled with a $1,500.00 loan and a comic mail-order stock that had helped finance my way through college.

The idea behind it is: An intern at The Pulse, Jess Lemon (gender in dispute), who isn't that familiar with comics (she or he has read Ghost World and that's about it) is given a mainsteam title to read and then make comments.
Yeah, it's true that she didn't seem too likely a candidate to wirte a glowing review of this book, but if DC is to attract new fans, the attitudes of people like her do have to be taken into consideration.
What amazes me is that folks at the Pulse took this as a serious review, and suggested that the reviewer read up on her comics theory and continuity before attempting another review.

Rich-Same guilty pleasure: read Outsiders #2, enjoyed it, bought#1 at SDCC(a fairly weak first issue) and loved #3(the cover is worth the price of admission and inside Luthor telling Joker Batman didn't *LOVE* the Joker as much Batman loved Catwoman!).
I realized that the Outsiders comic has good *SCENES* as opposed to a good plot, etc. It has darker humor than most comics because it is outragous at times and the characters seem to know that without breaking the "fourth wall."
I enjoyed the first 3 Outsiders when taken as a whole -- if my co-editor at Fanboy Planet hadn't convinced me to pick up the second issue, I would have just been annoyed at number 1.

 ICv2 News - Outsiders #8 'Edgy'
At least one retailer has run into a parent angry at the content of DC's Outsiders #8 being sold to a child, and DC has issued a statement in response.
Alan Davis of Silver Bullet Comics in Wilkesboro and Winston-Salem, North Carolina had a mother return an issue and tell him, "...I needed to be more aware of what I was providing to other people's children," Davis told us.
Davis attributed the situation to the fact that Outsiders customers had largely come over from Teen Titans, and the new content was a little old for some of them (he estimated the age of the child in question at around 12).

It's also nice to get a member from the original Outsiders showing up in these pages, even if it's largely to act as a figure of authority that our group can thumb their noses at.
Tom Raney might not be quite up to the task of delivering twelve issues of art a year but he's good for enough issues, that when he's paired with a solid guest-artist I'm delighted by the prospect of him being this book's regular artist.
I mean it's nice to see this character, but since I'm reading this issue to follow the exploits of the Outsiders, using the final page to introduce a character who could conceivably defeat Sabbac all by his lonesome isn't the best way to leave readers on pins and needles as we enter the final chapter.
