Topic: Ovadia Yosef

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Ovadia Yosef at AllExperts
In 2005, Rabbi Yosef repeatedly condemned the Gaza Disengagement.
Among secular Israelis, Yosef is mainly famous for being the leader of the political party called Shas and for his fierce and sharp rhetoric, often combined with curses and ill-wishes to hated political leaders.
Yosef's remarks were in accordance with two often quoted Talmudic edicts: That whenever one sees a misfortune, they should see it as a message that they should repent of their sins, and that if a person does not know how he has sinned, he should blame it on a lack of Torah study.

RABBI OVADIA YOSEF AND HIS CULTURE WAR IN ISRAEL
Apparently, the goal of rabbi Yosef's culture war is to bring the Israeli public, both religious and secular, to recognize Sephardi culture as a new ideology and social order in Israel.
Though initially hesitant, Rabbi Yosef soon gave his blessing to the new party, which he saw as a means of redressing discrimination against religious Sephardim.
Yosef was invited (in effect summoned) by Shach to attend a mass rally in Tel Aviv's Yad Eliyahu stadium.

Rav Ovadia spoke very emotionally and said, "On Friday night, I saw in a dream that the Mashiah came to the Kotel, and in the plaza, it was filled with people.
Rav Ovadia continued to describe to Rav Mutzafi that "there was a flag of the King Mashiah, and upon it, it was written 'רוח אפיו ימית רשע' [I don't know if this really supposed to be וּבְרוּחַ שְׂפָתָיו יָמִית רָשָׁע or not - YY].

Rav Ovadia Yosef (Or Torah Iyar 5761) imposes a major limitation on the rule that the wife must adopt her husband’s Halachic practices.

Most Israelis were outraged by the latest brainwave of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who attributed the damage done by Hurricane Katrina to American support for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and to the fact that the African-Americans of New Orleans weren’t studying Torah.
But Ovadia Yosef has admirers elsewhere, among a group of extreme antisemites whose official organ is the Historical Review Press.
The most recent one describes remarks by Yosef on the causes of Hurricane Katrina as “outrageous in the extreme.” It goes on to declare that “Rabbi Yosef’s remarks show a profound lack of empathy for the suffering of others, not to mention an extremely warped worldview.

New Bio Of Rav Ovadia - Hashkafah.com
In 1937, Rabbi Attia, head of the Porat Yosef yeshiva, asked Ovadia, who was all of 17 at the time, to teach a class every evening at the Persian synagogue in the marketplace of the Bukharan Quarter.
Rabbi Ovadia's repeated attempts, almost unknown to the public, to establish study centers for Sephardi spiritual leadership based on his pedagogic methods, illustrate how high he sets his sights: producing the next generation of rabbis and dayanim (religious judges) to proudly continue Sephardi Jewish tradition in Israel.
In this way, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef is building up a solid reputation as the sole halakhic authority for the Sephardi-Mizrahi community - a position that he will probably retain for a long time to come.

israelinsider: politics: Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's racist remarks attacked
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa yesterday accused Rabbi Ovadia Yosef of being "racist," saying recent remarks made by Yosef calling for the annihilation of Arabs and the use of missiles against them were ridiculous and represented a call for "mass killing."
Shas spokesman Itzik Sudri said the people who attended the sermon understood clearly that Yosef was referring to terrorists and not to Arabs in general.
Shas leader Eli Yishai said Yosef's comments were along the same line as calls by members of the government, including him, to target terrorists.

Turning to a different front, Yosef called the Palestinians "snakes" and "accursed, wicked ones," and cited Talmudic commentaries to claim that God was "sorry he created" all Arabs.
Over the past two decades, Yosef built the political party he founded, Shas, from a fringe movement of disaffected Eastern Jews to the third-largest bloc in the parliament, with 17 seats and the power to make or break governing coalitions.
Yosef's rants have done nothing to damage his standing among his constituents, most of whom resent what they perceive to be the superior airs of Israel's European or Ashkenazi élite, a frequent target of the rabbi's barbs.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and his "Culture War" in Israel by Omar Kamil
It is common among Israelis to argue that the Sephardi identity Rabbi Yosef is attempting to forge is a separatist one.
Rabbi Yosef´s wisdom, and simultaneously the secret of his success, lies in his ability to mobilize his supporters, not against the Ashkenazim in general, but rather against the secular and non-Jewish components of their ideology.
Further, Ovadia Yosef has succeeded in gaining an impressive presence in Israeli political and social life through his political party, Shas, and its social sub-organizations.

Miss Manners takes Rav Ovadia to the woodshed - Jewish Media Resources
Elyakim Rubinstein’s decision this week to open an investigation against Rabbi Ovadia Yosef demonstrates that the wrong lessons continue to be learned from the past and doom us to repeat past mistakes.
Rubinstein ordered an investigation of Rabbi Yosef on three grounds: encouraging violent acts that could lead to death or injury (under a statute leftover from the British Mandatory period, when it was used against the Jewish civilian population); insulting a public figure, and slander.
Rubinstein’s repeated citations of previous insults aimed by Rabbi Yosef at Supreme Court justices demonstrate how weak his case is and how little he apprehends his role.

Ovadia Yosef is no stranger to controversy, but rarely has the 80-year old rabbi offended so many people at the same time.

Ovadia Yosef was just four years old when he first arrived in Jerusalem.

 Rabbi Ovadia Yosef
In his battles against Ashkenazic Halacha (Jewish holy law) rulings in Israel, Rabbi Yosef fought to forge a united front of the Sephardim to ensure that their religious law has equal status--or prevails--against Ashkenazic interpretations.
According to Kimmerling's analysis, Rabbi Yosef is waging a bitter cultural war in the name of the Sephardim in order to establish an Israeli culture based on the Sephardi minhag.
It appears that the role of Rabbi Yosef in Israeli society can be explained in the framework of an Israeli culture war in which he battles against the Ashkenazic establishment, both religious and secular, to gain hegemony for a Jewish cultural identity based on the Sephardi minhag.

Rabbi Yosef's apology and the explanations emanating from his advisors in response to the appropriately large outcry the Rabbi's remarks caused fall far short of what is acceptable and needed in today's charged environment.
Neither Rabbi Yosef nor his advisors seem to have internalized the concept that violent actions based on political or religious beliefs perpetrated by individuals usually start with words.
The language used by Rabbi Yosef during his sermon was inciteful and can serve to legitimize violence against the Prime Minister or anyone who disagrees with the policies of the government.
