Rogers found overburden or top soil piled on the buffer area near the fence and near the excavator that was digging the pit.
Rogers testified the overburden was being separated from the material beneath it and the red clay aggregate was being mined.
His conclusion is based on the overburden on the high wall between the Meahans' fence and the excavation, overburden behind the excavator shown in a photograph he took, and a large pile of overburden near the existing road.

overburden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
NOTE: overburden must be placed before any scaling modules (such as Explode_and_Scale) to ensure an accurate slope angle during computations and subsequent visualizations.
overburden has one output port which outputs a field with an additional "overburden" data component in the same units as the concentration data component, which you wish to subset on.
Overburden creates a data component name that includes the wall slope, module name (including #1 or #2 if there are more than one copy in your application), and original data component (analyte) name.

Overburden eliminator rock drill bit - Patent 4911729
An improved overburden eliminator rock drill bit (10) is provided which includes a cylindrical body (12), cutting inserts (14) mounted thereon, and squared grooves (16) formed along the length of body (12) in a vertically tapered fashion.
The taper of grooves (16) serves to facilitate the upward migration of overburden material during the counter clockwise rotary action of bit (10).
As overburden is cut by cutting edges 30 it is forced upwardly into squared grooves 16 by the blowing action of air emerging from openings 32.

Chapter 5 - Planning the Overburden Analysis
Overburden sampling is accomplished by drilling or direct collection of the sample from an open source such as a highwall.
Before drilling the overburden hole, the driller should be instructed to clean the dust collector hood to remove any accumulated materials which may dislodge and contaminate the samples being collected.
The purpose of compositing the 1 ft (0.3 m) non-core overburden samples is to reduce the cost of performing overburden analysis laboratory testing by minimizing the samples to be tested but not at the cost of sacrificing the precision needed to accurately predict postmining water quality.

Overburden thickness isopleths of the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland
The Pittsburgh coal bed is composed of regionally persistent divisions- a roof division (coals and shales) and a lower division, referred to as the "main bench".
This dataset is a polygon coverage of the thickness of the overburden of the Pittsburgh Coal bed main bench, in feet.
Overburden polygons less than 90,000 square meters in area were deleted (these represented one grid cell or less and were insignificant for this regional scale product).

Stresses induced by the addition or removal of overburden
During erosion the stress due to removal of overburden pressure is compressional, whereas the stresses due to uplift on a sphere and the thermal stresses are ten- sional.
Because the magnitude of the thermal stress is the same as the overburden stress, it is clearly necessary to consider the thermal stress when calculating the stress in the Earth's crust due to erosion or sedimentation.
The stress due to uplift and the reduction of overburden pressure is given by equation 6.

Overburden is the rock that must be moved aside to access ore to be mined for further processing to produce metals for commercial purposes.
When ore is mined and overburden containing sulphides is left exposed to the elements, the action of water, oxygen and natural bacteria has the potential to create sulphuric acid.
This acidic water can dissolve metals contained in overburden rock which has the potential to be transported in water drainage systems and, if not properly managed, to cause adverse environmental impacts.

Pore Volume Compressibility as a Function of Effective Overburden Pressure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Gross Overburden - Pore Pressure, should be quantified and applied during the determination of the available reservoir storage capacity.
As the effective overburden pressure increases with production and a reduction in pore pressure, the change in pore space must also be established and used in reservoir simulations.
The observed ability of the rock fabric to withstand an increasing overburden loading is not restricted to porosity reduction, where there is inherent weakness.

The extent of the overburden isopach map is constrained by the boundaries of the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations, the Montana state line, and the outcrop (or clinker contact) of the Anderson coal bed, which defines the top of the Anderson-Canyon coal zone.
A caveat to Anderson-Canyon coal zone overburden relates to the area lying between the outcrops (or clinker contacts) of the Anderson and Canyon (or lower Canyon) coal beds, which define the top and base of the zone, respectively.
The overburden thickness categories included in the theme (for example, 0 - 100 ft, 100 - 200 ft, etc.) are consistent with overburden thickness categories used in the tabulation of total coal resources.

APP of Mine Overburden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Mine overburden and waste soils (commonly referred to as mine tailings) are the waste products generated during mining and milling operations.
When these sulfide minerals in mine overburden weather upon exposure to water and air, toxic metal ions and hydrogen ions are released into the environment.
A common treatment for acid producing mine overburden is to amend it with lime (calcium carbonate).

Impact of a complex overburden on analysis of bright reflections: A case study from the Mendocino Triple Junction
We use finite difference synthetic seismograms including a stochastic overburden representative of Franciscan rocks and a realistic target geometry to examine how typical seismic diagonostics are affected under these conditions.
Migrations of simulations, including combinations of overburden, target dip, and uneven spatial sampling, recover somewhat consistent but inaccurate approximations to the true target geometry: Discontinuous migrated images may result from a discontinuous wave field even where reflectors were continuous.

Under both the Federal and State schemes, the volume of the postmining overburden, spoil and waste material must be less than that of the combined premining volume of the overburden and coal in order for the proposed operation to qualify for the ``thin overburden'' AOC exemption.
Under both the Federal and State schemes, the volume of the postmining overburden, spoil and waste material must be greater than that of the combined premining volume of the overburden and coal, in order for the proposed operation to qualify for the ``thick overburden'' AOC exemption.
While the State's descriptions of thin and thick overburden are structured differently than the counterpart Federal definitions at 30 CFR 816.104(a) and 816.105(a), the State's requirements are, nevertheless, substantively identical to the Federal counterpart definitions and the performance standards.

GEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF ARSENIC SPECIATION IN OVERBURDEN SOILS, CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS
Central Massachusetts is a region with an elevated range of natural arsenic in the overburden (10’s to 100’s ppm), largely overlying bedrock sequences of the Merrimack Belt.
Samples of the overburden material were subjected to solutions designed to sequentially leach a specific fraction, progressing from exchangeable metals, to those bound to carbonates, then to those bound as reducible complexes, followed by metals bound to organic matter, and finally an aqua regia extract of the residual fraction.
Twenty selected samples of the overburden material within the elevated arsenic zone were collected at several different localities from depths of 0-3 ft. (7 samples), 3-6 ft. (7 samples), or 6-10 ft. (6 samples).

 Overburden Sampling AB Acctg
Materials exhibiting a net acid production potential of 5 tons/1,000 tons of overburden material or more as calcium carbonate equivalent are classed as toxic or potentially toxic (Smith and Sencindiver, 1982; Sobek and others, 1978; Sturm and others, 1984).
Sulfur fractionation studies of some Western overburden material have shown that about half of the total sulfur is present in organic forms and that acidity is being produced that cannot be accounted for by pyrite alone.
Application of this acid/base accounting method to overburden handling and placement plans throughout the country has generally been moderately effective in eliminating or reducing adverse water quality impacts.
