The Granite Railway, about 3 miles in length, was built by Gridley Bryant to convey huge blocks and columns of granite from the quarry in Quincy to Milton, on the Neponset River, for use in the construction of Bunker Hill Monument.

The first railway train ever operated from the Atlantic to the Pacific was the Trans-Continental Excursion sponsored by the Boston Board of Trade in May, 1870, one year after the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads were opened.

In 1891 the Railway Letter Act became law and new adhesive stamps, railway letter stamps, were issued by those Railway Companies who were signatories to the Act.
The colour of the railway letter stamp was to be green and the design as shown by the Cambrian Railways stamp shown here.
The railway letter fee was fixed at twice the postage and a postage stamp had to be affixed as well to comply with the Post Office’s monopoly for the carriage of letters.
