  Types of Vertical Water Wheels
The power generated by an overshot water wheel depends almost entirely on the weight of the water in the buckets, and the forward momentum of the water as it enters the buckets adds slightly to the increment of the wheel's power.
Another great problem with overshot water wheels is that often the water is directed from the chute onto the wheel too far forward of the vertical center of the water wheel and too much water flies over the wheel and never enters the buckets.
Like the overshot water wheels the pitch-back water wheels derive most of their power from the weight of the water in the buckets, but they receive a certain amount of additional impulse from the water as it is fed in and changes direction from the gate.

OSV - Overshot Wheel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The overshot wheel is a much more efficient wheel than the undershot; it can harness over 85% of the potential energy in falling water.
While the water filling the buckets has a slight force upon the wheel, the overshot is primarily a gravity wheel in that it is the dead weight of water in the buckets that causes it to turn.
Overshot wheels cannot turn when the water cannot freely flow away from them, a condition known as back-water, or wading.

The fishing overshot 20, with attached wireline, is then threaded through a pipe segment 30 and mates with the fishing spear 10 on its upper end 26 to form a wireline connection 28.
When the wireline connection 28 is outside of the pipe segment 30, the fishing overshot 20 is disconnected from the fishing spear 10 by depressing the tab 21 on the latch fingers 22 and thus urging the dogs 23 out and away from the fishing neck 15.
The wall thickness 27 of the unibody version of the fishing overshot 20 should be of sufficient size such that its yield strength exceeds any expected bending moments the fishing overshot 20 is expected to experience during normal wireline operations.

 Types of Waterwheel
Overshot waterwheel at Y-Felin If you can build you mill on the side of a hill, and have a water supply from above, then you will typically build an overshot wheel or a pitchback wheel.
The main difference between them is that with a pitchback wheel, the exhaust water flows away in the direction of the rotating wheel, whereas it flows away against the rotation of an overshot wheel.
The overshot wheel normally having straight buckets set tangentially to the wheel, the breastshot wheel having heavily curved buckets, and the undershot wheel simply having straight paddles sticking out from the rim.

 Coverlet
There was one warp yarn, usually a two-ply linen or cotton, a binder weft yarn in the same material as the warp, but often single ply, and a pattern weft, which was of colored woolen yarn.
The term "overshot" means that the supplementary weft patterning thread is "shot," or floated, over the plain warp threads, creating areas of solid color that stand out above a plain supporting weave.
The overshot weft threads, seen here as a combination of blue and red yarns, create variations in texture as well as pattern and produce the lively geometric surfaces that are characteristic of overshot coverlets.

It should be noted, however, that an overshot wheel is practical only for a small-capacity output.
As the headwater rises or falls, the sluice gate may be adjusted to meter the correct flow to the wheel.

This in turn means that to be visible in the offspring, both parents have to be carriers of the faulty gene.
