Owasco Lake is the third easternmost of the Finger Lakes.
Additionally, the Owasco Watershed Lake Association is actively involved in preserving the quality of both the lake and watershed by publishing an annual newsletter, conducting meets, supporting water quality sampling, and assisting in the support of the robotic buoy located ob the lake.
The acquisition and maintenance of the Owasco Lake robotic buoy was made possible by funds from the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology at Cayuga Community College (IAGT).

Cayuga Lake, on the western border, is 387 ft. above tide, and along nearly its whole extent in the co. the land slopes beautifully and evenly upward from its surface to the summits of the ridges.
It lies upon Owasco Lake and Inlet, in the E. part of the co. The greater part of its surface is a rolling upland, broken by the deep and narrow valleys of Owasco Inlet and its branches.

The lake trout spawn in the lake, but brown and rainbow trout go upstream to lay their eggs, where they are more susceptible to floods, pollution and severe silt runoff that smothers the eggs' absorption of oxygen.
Kukella guesses lake trout are surviving because they dive deeper than other species and may be avoiding the perilous sediment in the upper levels of water.
Even the size and weight of the lake trout is off, Kukella said, and fellow fisherman are saying the more populous walleyes and bass don't taste as good as they used to.

Owasco Lake has a watershed management plan that was developed from the issues of concern identified by stakeholders in the State of the Owasco Lake Watershed Report and this plan was approved in 2001 to address potential impacts to the water quality of Owasco Lake.

The initial climb from Moravia along Rockefeller Rd gains quite a bit of elevation, but at a fairly gentle rate.
