Owen County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1920.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $36,529, and the median income for a family was $41,282.

 General History of Owen County, Indiana
That portion of the county in which Gosport lies was in Monroe County; and where Quincy is, was in unorganized territory; the western border joined Vigo Co. It was not until April 1825 that the current borders were fixed.
The county was the primary administrative unit for carrying out policies dictated by state statues, and for administration of justice.
At times the county was governed by a Board of Justices consisting of all the Justices of the Peace sitting in a body rather than the three commissioners that were usual.

Owen County was named for Abraham Owen, a member of the Kentucky Militia, who was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
The Owen County Courthouse was built in 1911, replacing the origional brick structure.
Currently, the residents of Owen County are raising funds to restore the Courthouse dome.

So far only two Owen County cemeteries have been added to Lois Mauk's HALL OF SHAME and I'm sorry to say they are the Livingston Cemetery at Freeman in Clay Township and the Hopewell-Coffey Cemetery, also in Clay Township.

An earlier facility, known as the County Asylum or Poor Farm, was built about 1860 two miles down river from Spencer on State Road 67.
The County traded that former Tornmy Howe farm for 395 acres known as the Col. John Franklin farm and let a contract to William F. Mcgenhardt to build a brick County Asylum for a cost of $8,000.
