Owen Stanley Range is the south-eastern part of the central mountain-chain in Papua New Guinea.
Strictly, the eastern extremity of the range is Mount Victoria (13,363 feet), which was climbed by Sir William Macgregor in 1888, and it extends as far west as Mounts Thynne and Lilley.
The range is flanked by broken and difficult country, particularly on the south-western side.

It was on July 21, 1942, that Japanese troops landed on the northern coast of then New Guinea and unexpectedly began to march over the Owen Stanley Ranges with the intent of capturing Port Moresby.
On the Kododa Trail the Australian 7th Division resisted the Japanese General Horii's overland attempt to capture Port Moresby, and the advance was halted within 30 miles of the city.
Kokoda is a small plateau on the north-east slopes of the Owen Stanley Range and possessed a small airstrip the retention of which, for at least as long as it would take Australia to fly in supplies and reinforcements, was of great importance.

The campaign consisted of a series of battles fought from July 1942 to January 1943 between Japanese and Australian forces in the Owen Stanley Ranges of Papua New Guinea.
The Kokoda Track itself is single-file track starting just outside Port Moresby on the Coral Sea and (depending on definition) runs 60–100 kilometres through the Owen Stanley Ranges to Kokoda and the coastal lowlands beyond by the Solomon Sea.
The track crosses some of the most rugged and isolated terrain in the world, reaches 2,250 metres at Mount Bellamy, and combines hot humid days with intensely cold nights, torrential rainfall and endemic tropical diseases such as malaria.

The range was named after a British explorer who visited the coast of New Guinea in the 1840s.
The Kokoda Trail: This 60-mile trail, leading from the Port Moresby area up into the Owen Stanley Range, was first used by gold miners in the 1890's.
The plan was to land on the north coast near Popondetta, travel south to Kokoda and then march up over the central range to Sogeri and down to Port Moresby.

The major assault, across the Owen Stanley Ranges via the Kokoda Track, was progressing only slowly in the harsh terrain, difficult resupply conditions and in the face of vigorous Australian resistance.
On the northern side of a Bay, a poor track allowed some land movement, unlike on the southern side where the Stanley Range met the water in a series of impassable ridges and gorges.

Efogi was a small village on the southern slopes of the Owen Stanley Ranges and was the fourth staging post where many troops stopped overnight as they advanced over the Kokoda Track.
