In late 1967, Owsley's lab was raided by police; he was found in possession of a huge quantity of LSD, the equivalent of several hundred thousand individual doses.

Stanley, the son of the Rev. William STANLEY and Amanda OWSLEY, was born in Shelbyville in 1867.
Upon the death of Senator Ollie M. in May, 1919, Stanley resigned the governorship and was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator JAMES, serving in the United States Senate until 1925.
In the same year Stanley was appointed a member of the international boundary commission to settle certain boundary disputes between Canada and the United States.

Owsley "Bear" Stanley was the Grateful Dead´s soundman for many years; he was also one of the largest suppliers of LSD.
After Stanley was placed in jail for LSD production in 1970, the group briefly used house PAs, but ultimately found them to be less reliable than the systems conceived by their former soundman.
After Owsley Stanley was released from prison in late 1972, he, along with Dan Healy, Mark Raizene of the Grateful Dead´s sound crew, and Ron Wickersham, Rick Turner, and John Curl of Alembic Inc accomplished this by essentially combining eleven separate sound systems.

Owsley (Augustus Owsley Stanley III) was the undisputed king of the LSD trade at its height in the mid-sixties.
Owsley began to manufacture his own purple (Purple Haze) and white (White Lightning) tablets of 270 micrograms in 1965 an distributed them freely at the parties known as the 'Acid Tests', organised by Ken Kesey and Neal Cassady.
In 1969, LSD began to appear in microdots, and in 1971, on gelatin sheets nicknamed "windowpanes." Today, it comes in many forms - just about anything which will absorb a liquid has been used.

Hance: Jessica point out that Owsley might not refer to Stanley Owsley, the 60's-70's bay-area acid guru I have often though was the 'Owsley' mentioned in the Mayday ads.
As you see below, there is a Richard Owsley @ Univ. of N. Texas (which, as you'll note, is mentioned quite often) whose primary focus seems to be Heidegger.

Many who used both Sandoz and Owsley - the latter came in tablets of purple (Purple Haze) and white (White Lightning) of 270 micrograms - say that Owsley acid was less mystical and had more stimulant side reactions than the Sandoz product.
There were other smaller LSD laboratories before Owsley, and there were scores of laboratories that put out LSD at the same time that Owsley did.
Most Owsley acid was manufactured from lysergic acid monohydrate obtained from Sandoz before lysergic acid was proscribed.

Owsley, out of Alabama and a distant relative of Stanley Owsley, famed LSD maker and Grateful Dead manager, opened the show.
He had the audience bopping along almost immediately, with unbelievably catchy tunes like "Oh No the Radio" and "Coming Up Roses." Sort of nerdy looking, Owsley is an unlikely leader for a band, but his image is soon forgotten when one hears the delightful music emanating from within.
