I read about it somewhere when I first started watercolour painting and thought it sounded useful (after all, washes are pretty much the foundation of watercolour technique so anything which makes them work better has got to be good, surely?), so in my first flush of enthusiasm went out and bought a bottle.
I should probably also be a bit more scientific in testing the ox gall.
11-01-2004, 10:15 PM I use about 1 drop of ox gall for each 4 oz of distilled water for mixing, and I almost never have a problem with washes not adhering evenly to the paper.

In Japan, the stones are considered a powerful aphrodisiac, and go for about $1,000 an ounce.

I found some ox gall and gum arabic in my old supplies and cannot remember their use in watercolor painting.
Ox Gall breaks the surface tension of the water (somewhat like detergent, but without harming the paint or paper) and allows the paint to flow more.
Gum Arabic is the main binder in water colour paint.

The Ox Gall breaks the surface tension of the watercolour, allowing it to spread and penetrate better.
If you cant get Ox Gall, baby soap with a neutral pH can be used.
It's effect can be seen on a plastic surface - Try painting straight watercolour onto a piece of plastic, then add a little baby soap and see the difference.

I know they are said to "increase flow" and I forget what else.
01-10-2002, 12:06 AM I sometimes put ox gall in with my water as it helps to keeps the paint moist on the palette.
I have been given some gum arabic but havnt used it yet though I beleive it can be used for texture in your paint.
