  Oxalidales
Molecular data suggest Oxalidaceae and Cunoniaceae in particular are close (Price and Palmer 1993; Williams et al.
Oxalidaceae may be recognised by their usually compound leaves with pulvinate leaflets; their leaflets are entire and often have subpalmate venation.
The inflorescence is either cymose or has cymose branches, the flowers are heterostylous, the corolla is clawed, and soon withers or is deliquescent, the stamens are obviously of two lengths, and the styles have capitate stigmas.

 Oxalidaceae (Wood Sorrel) Family
Members of Oxalidaceae are characterized by 3-lobed clover-like leaf blades, and by fleshy underground rhizomes.
There are only two native species of Oxalidaceae in the Bay Area, and only one of these, Oxalis albicans pilosa (Hairy Wood Sorrel) occurs on Montara Mountain.
The other family member found on the mountain is the too-familar alien Oxalis pes-capre (Bermuda Sorrel or Sour Grass), that is responsible for the vast fields of flourescent yellow-green flowers seen from mid winter to early spring throughout the coast.
