Its immunity from interference may have owed something to the protection of the earl of Leicester, chancellor of the university, under whose auspices the press was established.
The Oxford press was officially recognised in 1586, by a Star chamber ordinance allowing one press and one apprentice.
Archbishop Laud, when he became chancellor of the university in 1630, bestowed much care in forwarding the interests of printing at Oxford, and one of his earliest actions in this direction was to procure from king Charles I a charter which conferred upon the university privileges equal to those possessed by Cambridge.

Anthony Storr reported that OUP has also closed its UK music-books list while opening "an unnecessarily grandiose entrance to [its] premises": though "making a great deal of money, the Press is notoriously mean in soliciting contributions to textbooks and other works.
OUP has transferred over $80 million to Oxford University during the last five years and invests $8 million a year in work on the new Oxford English Dictionary and Dictionary of National Biography - "the world's largest research projects in the humanities."
OUP's worldwide educational and ELT publishing is profitable, but "the rest of its list must be carefully managed," Thomas observes.

It would be interesting to hear from the regular readers of “The Oxford Etymologist” whether the content (the choice of topics and the answers to questions), format, and style of the blog satisfy them and whether it would be expedient to devote more attention to some other aspects of etymology.

Oxford Journals, a division of Oxford University Press has announced a new agreement with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) that will allow all content published as open access under its Oxford Open model to be available from PubMed Central.
The agreement is designed for authors publishing with Oxford Journals to meet the requirements of their funding bodies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), who request all NIH-funded content to be deposited into PubMed Central within 12 months of online publication.
Oxford Journals has also announced that Oxford and SIMID SA have signed an agreement where all full-text articles from some of Oxford's medical journals will be available for purchase via the database of SIMID SA.
