Abingdon is eight miles south of Oxford, in the flat valley of the Thames and is situated on the west (right) bank of that river, where the small river Ock flows in from the Vale of White Horse.
Abingdon Abbey was founded in Saxon times, possibly the 7th century but its early history is confused by numerous legends, invented to raise its status and explain the place-name, since -don means a hill and Abingdon stands in a valley.
Abingdon was the county town of Berkshire and the magnificent county hall and court house, now the museum, was supposedly designed by Christopher Wren.

OXFORD, July 17 – The rainbow flag will be flying on the Oxford Town Hall on December 21, the first day of same-sex civil partnership ceremonies in England, the city’s Lord Mayor promised yesterday.
Oxford will “fly the flag on the Town Hall” as the first couples are officially recognised, he said.
There were groups sitting on the grass with a picnic being entertained, community organisations with stalls and a display of local gay history over the past 25 years.

The first phase of a new vaccine trial was launched in Oxford last week in a bid to boost international efforts to find a vaccine against HIV.

Oxford West and Abingdon MP, Dr Evan Harris, will be returning to the science laboratories of Oxford University on Friday 1 July to see the latest developments in astrophysics research as part of a nationwide scheme which pairs academics with Members of Parliament.
Dr Joanne Baker, Royal Society University Research Fellow in Astrophysics at Oxford, spent a week in Westminster in October shadowing Dr Harris in his parliamentary and constituency business.
Now Dr Baker and her colleagues will get an opportunity to showcase their work on observational cosmology, and show the MP the recently installed dome for the Philip Wetton Telescope, the University’s first night time telescope for over 100 years.
