  ATSDR - ToxFAQs™: Phosgene Oxime
Phosgene oxime is a manufactured chemical that was developed as a potential chemical warfare agent, but its use on the battlefield has never been documented.
Pure phosgene oxime is a colorless, crystalline solid; the munitions grade compound is a yellowish-brown liquid.
Phosgene oxime vapors are broken down in the atmosphere by reacting with substances commonly found in the air, but this is a very slow process.

NTP: Abstract for Immunotoxicity of Aldicarb Oxime
Aldicarb oxime [2-Methyl-2-(methyl-thio)-propanal, oxime] is produced primarily as an intermediate in the synthesis of aldicarb [2-methyl-2-(methylthio)-prioionaldehyde)-(methylcarbamoyl) oxime] which is used as a pesticide.
Aldicarb oxime was nominated to the NTP for toxicological evaluation with moderate priority because of the production volume and lack of a toxicological data base.
Aldicarb oxime produced no changes in the number or function of T cells which are considered biologically meaningful.

Oximes can also be obtained from reaction of nitrites such as isoamyl nitrite with compounds containing an acidic hydrogen atom.
The hydrolysis of oximes proceeds easily by heating in the presence of various inorganic acids, and the oximes decompose into the corresponding ketones or aldehydes, and hydroxylamines.
The oxime of perillaldehyde is used as an artificial sweetener in Japan, as it is 2000 times sweeter than sucrose.

Heterocyclic Derived Oxime Ethers in Asymmetric Synthesis
Oxime ethers 5, 6 and 9 were prepared by condensation with a new hydroxylamine SOPHEA, (S)-O-(2-Hydroxy-1-PHenylEthyl)hydroxylAmine 11, which was prepared from (R)-phenylethan-1,2-diol as described by Scheme 2.
Compared to the thiophene derived oxime ether 2, the thiazole oxime ether 3 had greater catalytic activity increasing the yield to 75% but the enantioselectivity was unchanged.
Oxime ethers 7, 8, 9 and 10 were also prepared and were included in the study for completeness.

CDC | Facts About Phosgene Oxime
Phosgene oxime is also referred to as a corrosive agent because of the type of skin and tissue damage it causes.
The extent of poisoning that phosgene oxime causes depends on the amount of phosgene oxime to which a person is exposed, how the person is exposed, and the length of time of the exposure.
Absorbing phosgene oxime through the skin or inhaling it may result in fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) with symptoms of shortness of breath and cough.

Butanal oxime was chosen for toxicology testing as a representative of the aldoxime class.
All 600 mg/kg rats died or were killed moribund during the first week of the study; in the 600 mg/kg mouse groups, seven males and nine females died, were killed moribund, or were killed accidentally before the end of the study.
Degeneration of the nasal olfactory epithelium was observed in dosed rats and mice that died early as well as in animals that survived to the end of the studies.

Before complex machinery was developed for chemical analysis, benzoin oxime was used in the gravimetric (by mass) determination of the element molybdenum.
The heat must have been sufficient to vapourize some of the benzoin oxime which then sublimed (gas directly to solid) forming the curlicues in the image.

eMedicine - CBRNE - Urticants, Phosgene Oxime : Article Excerpt by: Erik D Schraga, MD
Background: Phosgene oxime (CX) is an urticant or nettle agent that causes a corrosive type of skin and tissue injury.
Although CX is often grouped with the vesicant chemical warfare agents, it is not a true vesicant because it does not cause blisters.
Possible mechanisms of toxicity include necrotizing effects of the chloride component or a direct effect of the oxime or corbonyl groups.

A comparison of the efficacy of a bispyridinium oxime--1,4-bis-(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium) butane dibromide and cur
The efficacy of a bispyridinium oxime 1,4-bis(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium) butane dibromide, called K033, and of currently used oximes (pralidoxime, obidoxime, oxime HI-6), to reactivate acetylcholinesterase inhibited by various nerve agents (sarin, tabun cyclosarin) was tested by in vitro methods.
The new oxime K033 was found to be a more efficacious reactivator of sarin or cyclosarin-inhibited acetylcholinesterase than pralidoxime and obidoxime but it did not reach the efficacy of oxime HI-6 in the case of the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase by sarin or cyclosarin.
Thus, oxime K033 seems to be a relatively efficacious broad spectrum acetylcholinesterase reactivator and, therefore, could be useful if no information about the type of nerve agent used was available.
