John Oxley (1785?-1828) was a naval officer, surveyor and explorer and was born in England.
Oxley believed that the interior was marshland and unsuitable for settlement.
Oxley chose Redcliffe Point as the first site as there was plenty of fresh water, fertile soil and plenty of timber for building.

Aerial photographs for the unconstructed section of the Highway between the Oxley Highway, 5km north of Coonabarabran and West Narrabri, were obtained in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, which had already arranged for aerial photographs of the State Forests in the Pilliga Scrub area.
On 26 September 1945 the Newell Highway was re-routed to the eastern side of the highway between Gillenbah and Morundah, as this route traversed higher ground and thus improved flood immunity.
During 1958-59 the Highway was reconstructed and sealed to a width of 18 feet.

(Oxley) [10.39]: I bring to the attention of the House the need for the upgrading of the Oxley Highway, which runs through Wauchope and links the coast with the tablelands.

 Tornado near Coonabarabran 2005 Jan 20
It crossed the Oxley Highway near the end of its path where a car and a truck were forced to stop, becoming trapped by falling trees.
The tornado was around 300m wide on crossing the Oxley Hwy and was probably on the ground for around 5 minutes after a long buildup.
After crossing the highway, there is no ground scouring for about 200m but then some intense scouring has removed a cover of grass and saffron thistle.

Continuing north, the Pacific Highway passes through countryside varying from rugged state forests to rich dairy farmland, bypassing the key centre of Taree and through the Camden Haven region to reach the Oxley Hwy junction near Port Macquarie.
As a result, the massive project of duplicating the entire highway's length was commenced during the early 1990's with roadwork set to continue perhaps for a further 20 years before completion.

This sign was installed because previously the Gilgandra-Coonabarabran section of the Newell Highway was part of the Oxley Highway.
Open road sections of the Newell Highway are mostly 110km/h zones (NRMA quoted 70% of the highway in their 2002 audit) and it forms a boundary between the more densely populated eastern half of the state and the flat, sparse western plains.
The Newell Highway shared this bridge with interstate rail traffic until the current 2-lane concrete bridge was built in 1987.

A WOMAN has been killed in a crash in northern NSW which left the Oxley Highway closed in both directions.
A car travelling west along the highway left the carriageway and collided with an embankment at Somerton, near Tamworth, about 8.53pm (AEDT) yesterday, NSW Police said.
The Oxley Highway was closed overnight and local diversions were put in place.

The first European in the area was Surveyor John Oxley who named Mount Seaview (because he could see the sea) and the Hastings River (after Lord Warren Hasting, Governor of India) as he passed through the area in 1818.

All travel instruction are from the Kew traffic lights on the Pacific Highway - the turnoff to the town of Laurieton.
From New England via Oxley Highway - Kew is approximately 4 hours from Armidale via the Oxley Highway through Walcha and Wauchope to the roundabout intersection with the Pacific Highway at the Port Macquarie turnoff.
It is 7km from Kew to Laurieton and 6km from Laurieton to the Pilot Station, at the mouth of the Camden Haven River.
