Oxy-fuel welding and cutting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acetylene is the fuel first used for oxy-fuel welding and remains the fuel of choice for repair work and general cutting and welding.
The apparatus used in gas welding consists basically of an oxygen source and a fuel gas source (usually cylinders), two pressure regulators and two flexible hoses (one of each for each cylinder), and a torch.
Between the regulator and hose, and ideally between hose and torch on both oxygen and fuel lines, a flashback arrestor and/or non-return valve should be installed to prevent flame or oxygen-fuel mixture being pushed back into either cylinder and damaging the equipment or making a cylinder explode.

 Materials Engineering (UK) Oxy-Gas Welding
The high flame temperature required for oxy-fuel welding and cutting processes is obtained by combining oxygen with a fuel gas to produce flame temperatures of approximately 2500°C to 3000°C. There are certain precautions to be taken when using gases and these are described below:-
Single stage are suitable for welding with maximum outlet pressure of 2.1 bar, or scrap and heavy duty cutting with pressures of 8.3 to 14 bar.

For some years now, there has been a debate over whether it is safer to leave a portable oxy-fuel welding and cutting unit in a constant state of readiness for use, or whether the unit should be disassembled when it will not be used for "X" period of time.
Based on some years of observation, the greatest lapse in training of employees who are assigned to perform welding and cutting tasks is probably in the care and handling of the equipment they use.
The combination of an unintentional release of acetylene into the atmosphere of a workplace combined with an errant spark when the ratio of fuel gas to oxygen falls between the LEL and UEL would certainly qualify as a formula for disaster.
