Arg-gingipain Activity Mediates Methaemoglobin Formation by Whole Cells of P. gingivalis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
We have shown that the haem-pigment of P. gingivalis is composed of the µ-oxo bishaem of iron(III) protoporphyrin IX.
The process of oxyhaemoglobin oxidation by cells of P. gingivalis is inhibited by NEM and TLCK, suggesting that either Lys- and/or Arg-gingipains mediate this step.
Objectives: To examine the interactions of oxyhaemoglobin with Kgp- and Rgp-deficient mutants of P. gingivalis W50 to determine the possible roles of Lys- and Arg-gingipains in methaemoglobin formation.

Accuracy of a pulse oximeter in the measurement of the oxyhaemoglobin saturation
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy, in comparison with a reference method, of the Nellcor N-20P pulse oximeter in the assessment of oxyhaemoglobin saturation (Sa,O2).

Xanthochromia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
CSF is scanned for pigments spectrophotometrically between wavelengths of 350 and 650nm.
The latter two peaks have characteristically different shapes from the corresponding peaks of oxyhaemoglobin.
In case of oxyhaemoglobin, absorbance greater than 0.02 is considered reportable.

 Spectrosopic Analysis - Hawk
These are the typical absorption-bands of oxyhaemoglobin obtained from dilute solutions of blood.
Note that in place of the two absorption bands of oxyhaemoglobin we nowhave a single broad band lying almost entirely between D and E. This is the typical spectrum of haemoglobin.
Add a few drops of Stokes' reagent to the methaemoglobin solution while it is in position before the spectroscope and note the immediate appearance of the oxyhaemoglobin spectrum which is quickly followed by that of hamoglobin.

Here are orthogonal views of (oxy)haemoglobin illustrating the positions of the proximal and distal histidines in relation to the haem.
oxyhaemoglobin crystal structure contains only one alpha and one beta subunit (because the other half of the tetramer is related by crystal symmetry).

Magnetic Resonance TIP - MRI Database : 'Haemoglobin'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This partly explains the special appearance of an aging haematoma in MR imaging and is also the basic of the blood oxygenation level dependent contrast (BOLD) used in functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain (fMRI).
Oxyhaemoglobin (the principal haemoglobin in arterial blood) has no substantial magnetic properties, but deoxyhaemoglobin (present in the draining veins after the oxygen has been unloaded in the tissues) is strongly paramagnetic.
By using T2 weighted gradient echo EPI sequences, which are highly susceptibility sensitive and fast enough to capture the three-dimensional nature of activated brain areas will show an increase in signal intensity as oxyhaemoglobin is diamagnetic and deoxyhaemoglobin is paramagnetic.

Sleep apnoea and autonomic function -- Zwillich 53 (Supplement 3): 20 -- Thorax
During both short and longer apnoeas, oxygen administration prevented oxyhaemoglobin desaturation (not shown) and the decrease in heart rate seen during apnoea when the subjects were breathing room air.
During room air breathing apnoea is associated with oxyhaemoglobin desaturation and a significant decrease in heart rate.
Breathing 100% oxygen prior to breath holding (C) eliminated oxyhaemoglobin desaturation and the decrease in heart rate found under previous conditions.

All CSF specimens are precious and should be analysed no matter how they were transported, where necessary with appropriate notice of the caveats regarding oxyhaemoglobin.
An increase in CSF bilirubin is the key finding which supports the occurrence of SAH, but it is not specific for this.
Oxyhaemoglobin occurring on its own is difficult to interpret and may be increased as a result of in vitro haemolysis of red cells introduced into the CSF during lumbar puncture.
